Theft charges for couple who spent $100k from bank transfer by mistake

A Pennsylvania couple is accused of theft after occurring a procuring spree with $120,000 that was mistakenly deposited into their checking account, based on a report.

Mr and Mrs Williams, 36 and 35 respectively, have been charged with theft and receiving stolen property.

Speaking to WWMT, officials said the couple had the money paid into their account on May 31 through a mistake by a teller.

The pair reportedly gave their friends in need each $15 000 (about R225 000).

It's reported that around 20 June, BB&T noticed the mistake and transferred the money to the correct account, which resulted in the Williams racking up $107,416 (£87,000) in overdraft fees. Instead of contacting the bank about the money, they then allegedly blew the cash in two and a half weeks between June 3 and June 19.

Their account's average balance was $1,000.

Alternatively, reports mentioned the couple had already spent loads of the money on a new SUV, two four-wheelers, and a vehicle trailer.

The Pennsylvania couple who police say spent over $100,000 of money that wasn't theirs were in court on Monday.

"That's more or less pretty, with the final procedures the banks have location up, checking and double-checking and triple-checking, there could be now not any plan anybody gets away with that stuff", Nate Weaver, a neighbour of the Williamses, instructed WNEP.

BB&T then contacted Mrs Williams to tell her that she and her husband would be required to pay the cash back.

Reports mentioned Robert Williams fast police each and every he and his wife knew the "mislaid money did no longer belong to them, however they spent it anyway".

They've since been released on a $25,000 bond. When the customer contacted the bank to ask about the missing deposit, investigators discovered the funds had gone into the Williams' joint account, the affidavit said. She also told them that she would talk to her husband to come up with a repayment agreement.

"I would check in with the bank first before I didn't anything, I'm not that dumb but some people do stupid things sometimes", neighbor Robert Painton told WNEP.
