Three people have been killed in a "very serious" shooting incident in the Dutch city of Dordrecht, officials said Monday night.

Later, they tweeted that three people were killed and one severely injured.


It was not immediately clear if the 35-year-old officer was related to the children, who were aged 8 and 12, or to the 28-year-old injured woman.

A girl was additionally significantly wounded in the course of the "extremely serious shooting" within the Dutch metropolis of Dordrecht.

A fourth family member was seriously hurt, the newspaper said.


Police said further investigation was needed to definitively establish the motive.

The incident happened at 6:30 p.m. on Monday when emergency services were called for a shooting at a residence in Dordrecht, about 21 kilometers (13 miles) southeast of Rotterdam.

Dordrecht Mayor Wouter Kolff visited the neighborhood on Monday evening and will hold talks with the police on Tuesday.
