Canada soldiers helping to remove fallen trees after Dorian

Hurricane Dorian devolved into Post-Tropical Cyclone Dorian with the NHC issuing its last advisory for the system at 11 p.m. Sunday saying it had become "fully extratropical" as it moved over the Labrador Sea and into the Atlantic Ocean, while Tropical Storm Gabrielle spins with 60 miles per hour winds over the central Atlantic Ocean with a five-day track that puts it just northwest of Scotland by Thursday.

The governor said officials were aware of no serious injuries on the Outer Banks from the storm.

About 300 soldiers from Canadian Forces Base Gagetown in central New Brunswick were expected to help with cleaning up debris and restoring electricity on Sunday afternoon, a military official confirmed. AT Sunday, there were more than 380,000 customers in Nova Scotia and 54,000 in New Brunswick without power.

Their high-profile deployment - carried out under bright sunshine - was part of a wider effort to deal with power outages that have left much of the Maritimes in the dark for two days.

Hurricane Dorian first appeared in the Atlantic on August 26 and islands in the eastern Caribbean went on alert as the storm strengthened.

These potential storms come in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian, a Category 5 storm that ravaged the Bahamas earlier this week.

"We are still in a very unsafe situation in some parts of the province", she said, adding that the utility had crews aboard four helicopters surveying the damage.

The agency said it was environment up shelters or momentary housing for the newly homeless across the islands and appealed for Bahamians to choose in storm victims.

The remnants of the hurricane slammed into mainland Nova Scotia and southern New Brunswick on Saturday afternoon, churning out sustained winds near Halifax at almost 150 kilometres an hour. "The safety of Canadians is our number one priority and we're ready to help Atlantic Canada through this storm", Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Twitter.

Both North and SC received Hurricane Dorian as a Category 1 storm Friday morning, while Virginia was hit as well.

Neither storm is predicted at this time to reach land, but the hurricane center is monitoring them as they move and develop. Five deaths have been blamed on the storm so far. "That’s what we want, too", Nova Scotia Power CEO Karen Hutt said in a statement.

She says trees were uprooted and she could see a construction crane smashed into and wrapped around a building.
