Walmart to Discontinue Sales of Certain Guns After Deadly Shootings

CEO Doug McMillon announced on Tuesday that the company will discontinue sales of some types of rifle ammunition, which can be used with military-style weapons.

The shooters in both attacks were armed with assault weapons.

The retailer will stop selling handgun and short-barrel rifle ammunition at all of its stores in the United States, after it runs out of its current inventory.

Walmart also says that signs will be added in stores to inform customers of those changes. Kroger has demonstrated with our actions that we recognize the growing chorus of Americans who are no longer comfortable with the status quo and who are advocating for concrete and common sense gun reforms. Gabby Giffords, was among those that offered praise.

Walmart is further requesting that customers refrain from openly carrying firearms at its stores unless they are law enforcement officers.

Another person said, "Any store that won't let me protect myself while shopping is not worthy of my business". Walmart will do the same for handgun ammunition, and it will stop handgun sales in Alaska, "marking our complete exit from handguns", McMillon said. It stopped selling assault rifles in 2015 and raised its minimum gun purchasing age to 21 past year after the Parkland, Florida, shooting. I have dedicated my life to moments like this, moments that will save lives. Walmart also pressured Congress to enact gun safety measures. Bernie Sanders were among those cheering the policy as a "step in the right direction".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has said he's willing to bring gun control legislation to the Senate floor if Trump supports it. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Congress should take the lead on the issue. Universal background checks have the support of about 90 percent of Americans including 74 percent of NRA members.

Alyssa Milano, Parkland survivor David Hogg and presidential candidates Beto O'Rourke and Sen.

Several of the top-tier Democrats running for president criticized large corporations like Walmart on the campaign trail for not paying their fair share in taxes, including U.S. Sens.

Ohio-based supermarket chain Kroger requested on Tuesday that customers "no longer openly carry firearms into our stores".

The two retailers are among a growing number of USA companies, such as Delta Air Lines and Bank of America, that are responding to the debate over guns and gun safety as mass shootings have proliferated, risking backlash from powerful gun owners' groups while elected leaders consider options. Walmart also stopped selling handguns in every state but Alaska in the mid-1990s and only sells a firearm to customers after receiving a "green light" on a background check.

Another shopper says he is pro-gun, has a concealed carry permit, but doesn't know if that will stop the shootings.
