US Democrats criticise Pence for staying at Trump hotel in Ireland

"We understand these are complex issues", said Pence after arriving at Shannon Airport from Poland where he commemorated the 80th anniversary of the beginning of World War Two.

"We can't believe we have to say this but simply meeting with a gay person doesn't erase Pence's long history of attacking LGBTQ people through policy, legislation, and rhetoric", the LGBT advocacy organisation GLAAD tweeted.

While travelling on board Air Force Two from Shannon to Dublin earlier, the Vice President's Chief of Staff Marc Short was questioned by reporters about the decision to stay at Trump Doonbeg.

Late Yesterday afternoon, Vice President Pence and his wife Karen landed in Shannon to be greeted by the Tánaiste, where he and Simon Coveney discussed Brexit in detail.

Pence's stay was paid for by US taxpayers, Short said, but the vice president personally paid for his sister and mother who had travelled with him.

"As you know the U.S. administration is quite well-disposed toward Brexit and you have heard what President Trump has said about that".

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has demanded that the so-called "backstop" clause be removed as it could subject Britain to European Union rules after exit day, but the Irish government says that can only happen if an alternative mechanism to ensure an open border is agreed.

Mr. Pence thanked Mr. Coveney for "his candor" and said the US will work with the U.K.to ensure that any Brexit deal does not violate the Good Friday agreements between the British and Irish governments.

Speaking yesterday, the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said Vice President Pence is a "real friend of Ireland" - adding that he would use the meeting to "spell out" the threat posed to the island by Brexit.

Vice-President Mike Pence and his wife Karen Pence pose for a photo with Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar and his partner Dr.Matt Barrett in Dublin, Ireland, September 3, 2019. The hotel also hosted the Trump family during a brief trip to Ireland by the president in June.

But the fact that Pence was traveling to Doonbeg at all has raised eyebrows The village is about 140 miles from Dublin.

Pence called it an "opportunity" to spend the night there, arguing that it was "logical" because Doonbeg is "a fairly small place" and the Trump golf club could "accommodate the unique footprint that comes with our security detail and other personnel".

"Six months ago, our family had the great pleasure of hosting you and Matt at the Vice President's Residence to celebrate St. Patrick's Day".
