Injured Djokovic quits US Open clash with Wawrinka

In the third set of his fourth round match against Stan Wawrinka Sunday night, tennis legend Novak Djokovic was booed off the court for retiring due to a sore left shoulder.

Afterwards, Djokovic confirmed that the left shoulder that had played up during his second-round match against Juan Ignacio Londero - and which he had claimed was "almost pain-free" when he faced Denis Kudla on Friday - had flared up again with a vengeance.

In an era where men's tennis has been dominated by the "Big 3" of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka can at times be a forgotten man.

Djokovic was trailing 6-4, 7-5, 2-1 and being thoroughly outplayed when he retired from the match in Arthur Ashe Stadium, shaking his head as he walked over to the chair umpire to say he was conceding.

Wawrinka will face No. 5 Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals. "I'm really happy with the level", said Wawrinka.

The five-time U.S. Open champion continues his quest for a record 21st Grand Slam tournament title against the victor of the match now underway between Grigor Dimitrov and Alex de Minaur.

"I'm not being offended by, mistreated by anybody", he said.

The Bulgarian has reached the last eight at majors four times previously, but his clash against Federer will be his first grand slam quarter-final since the 2018 Australian Open. "Obviously they came to see a full match, and it just wasn't to be".

"Doubles, I came in with a little more pressure on myself than singles because I know I have someone else that I can't let down". Even more surprising, it opens up the possibility of Nadal and Federer playing in the U.S. Open for the first time ever. But Djokovic, who had endured weeks of constant pain, was far from his peak.

"It's frustrating. Very frustrating", Djokovic said.

The 38-year-old Swiss third seed is 7-0 lifetime against 78th-ranked Dimitrov, who dispatched Australia's 38th-ranked Alex de Minaur 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. "I mean, a lot of people didn't know what's happening, so you can not blame them". "I did some things that I'm not proud of and that I'm working on to be a better person on the court, because I do think I'm a good person out of the court". I just hope I'll get a chance to be competing, because once I'm healthy, you know, I actually like my chances playing in Asia. Explaining his success over the Serb, the Russian said: "My style matches his, not weaknesses because he doesn't really have weaknesses, but the match is something that's disturbing him".
