Hundreds of Flights Canceled as Hurricane Dorian Approaches U.S. East Coast

A worker paints "OPEN" across the boarded-up window of a gas station as Hurricane Dorian continues to make its way toward the Florida coast on September 1, 2019 in Melbourne, Florida. That storm did not make landfall.

Hurricane Dorian has weakened slightly as it batters the northern Bahamas but the National Hurricane Center in Miami says the Category 5 storm still remains "extremely risky".

With wind and rain possible without direct landfall, many Florida residents are still preparing and Gov. Ron DeSantis has announced voluntary evacuations for Osceola County, Glades, Hendry and Indian River counties, as well as in parts of Palm Beach County that are not under mandatory evacuation orders.

Currently, the storm is moving towards the Florida east coast over the course of Monday and is expected to swing northwards, roughly following the contours of the US coastline.

Allen in 1980 was the most powerful, with 190 miles per hour (306 kph) winds, the NHC said.

Potentially devastating winds from Hurricane Dorian have strengthened yet again as the storm nears the Bahamas.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the centre and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles.

Hurricane Dorian's eye is crawling over the Bahamas' northernmost island, but residents are warned not to leave their shelters.

"These hazards will cause extreme destruction in the affected areas", the center said, "and will continue for several hours". "Dorian will slow to a crawl and may not emerge from the Bahamas until sometime Tuesday when it begins to move more to the north". Then it will gradually turn to the northwest and north.

The hurricane is now stalled over Grand Bahama Island in the northern Bahamas, where meteorologists predict it will remain for much of today (Sept. 2).

The hurricane will then move "dangerously close" to Florida late tonight through Wednesday evening and then very close to the Georgia and SC coasts on Wednesday night and Thursday, the hurricane center said.

Dorian's current track is in between the paths of Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Floyd (illustrated left).

The storm has weakened slightly this morning, as its eye has expanded, and its organization lessened a little bit.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami upgraded Hurricane Dorian early Sunday to a "catastrophic" Category Five, the highest on its five-point scale.

The core of the storm is expected to be near or over parts of the northwestern Bahamas later Sunday.

"Dorian will now create prolonged periods of large swells, surges along the north coast of Grand Bahama and the north and east coast of Abaco", said Jeffrey Simmons, the deputy director of Bahamas' department of meteorology.

By day 3, Dorian is forecast to turn northeastward ahead of a trough of low pressure approaching from the west. The hurricane continues to move very slowly and it will be at its closest to the Florida coast late Tuesday now.

A Storm Surge Watch has been issued from the Volusia/Brevard County Line to the Flagler/Volusia County Line. "That cone of uncertainty still includes a lot of areas on the east coast of Florida and even into central and north Florida, so we are staying prepared and remaining vigilant". On either side, a hurricane watch is up - down to Boca Raton and up through the Florida/Georgia border.

A hurricane warning is in effect. Tropical Storm Juliette was 455 miles (735 km) from Manzanillo, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph (95 kph), the NHC said.

"We've just been trying to get perishables, getting water, getting flashlights".

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Dorian brought a storm surge of 18-23 feet to the Caribbean island chain, which is still recovering from the powerful Hurricane Irma, which hit the islands in 2017, leaving 47 people dead.
