Australia to join US-led coalition

On Wednesday, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the country will contribute troops, a surveillance plane, and a frigate in order to protect shipping lanes near Iran.

A joint statement by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne and Defense Minister Linda Reynolds said Australia will deploy a P-8A Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft by the end of 2019, an Australian Frigate in January and provide the International Maritime Security Construct headquarters in Bahrain with defense personnel.

"Freedom of navigation for Australia as a trading island nation is completely central to our national interest", Mr Marles told reporters in Sydney.

Australia's effort will aid the USA -launched the campaign, dubbed Operation Sentinel, which seeks to ensure ships can exercise freedom of navigation through the strategic strait without restraint by hostile forces, a point touched on by Mr. Morrison.

"So it is a potential threat to our economy".

"Australia will defend our interests wherever they may be under threat".

US-led mission but involve at least Australia, UK and Bahrain.

In July, Iran seized two oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, which marked a dramatic escalation in the worsening standoff in the Gulf.

Responding to the question as to if the Australians would use force, the chief of the Australian Defense Force, General Angus Campbell, said, "Our people are very well-trained, and they'll be operating under global law".

"Freedom of navigation through global waters is a fundamental right of all states under worldwide law".

On June 13, two oil tankers, Japanese Kokuka Courageous and Norwegian Front Altair, were attacked near the Strait of Hormuz while in the Gulf of Oman, sustaining fire damage.

US President Donald Trump withdrew Washington in 2018 from a big-power deal that had scrapped worldwide sanctions in return for curbs on Iran's nuclear program. Last month Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps seized a British-flagged oil tanker.

"We appeal to you for a debate in our parliament on the growing tensions between the U.S. and Iran, and steps which Australia could take to reduce them".

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is likely to visit Japan this month for talks on the situation in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, diplomatic sources have said.
