Man Charged in Connection With Rice Cooker Incidents

The New York Police Department Chief of Detectives announced on Saturday morning that the man wanted in connection with leaving pressure cookers at a downtown subway station was taken into custody.

Three suspicious devices that turned out to be empty rice cookers were discovered Friday morning in downtown NY, prompting a brief scare as residents began their day. "Another cooker was found near a garbage can in Chelsea just over an hour later".

NY officials are now saying the objects are not explosive.

"This is the classic if-you-see-something-say-something, but based on everything we know right now we have an all-clear", he added. Officials describe the man to be in his 20s or 30s with dark hair.

A West Virginia sheriff's department said Griffin had a criminal history in the state.

The discoveries, which were first reported at about 7 a.m. EDT (1100 GMT) created havoc for thousands of motorists and commuters on the numerous subway lines that converge at Fulton Street as police and bomb squad vehicles swarmed to the scene.

"There's a person of interest".

Police said the devices were deemed to be safe, but the investigation continued as they searched for a suspect.

In September 2016 a homemade pressure cooker bomb went off in Chelsea, injuring 31 people.

This photo released by NYPD shows a person of interest wanted for questioning in regard to the suspicious items placed inside the Fulton Street subway station in Lower Manhattan on Friday, Aug. 16, 2019 in NY.

The bomb squad after investigating determined the pressure cookers "non-explosives" and has been cleared from the station. "We have had similar-type devices found, also which were not wired but which were very suspicious-looking".

A third suspicious package, this one placed next to a trash can at 16th Street and Seventh Avenue, has also been deemed to be nothing more than a rice cooker.

The sheriff's department says it has arrested the 26-year-old at least three times in the past eight years, including one in 2017 alleging he sent obscene material to a minor.

As a result of the investigation, subway service was suspended on the No.2 and No. 3 lines.
