Mr Modi said past governments had lacked the courage to take such a bold step because they were anxious about their political future. His aim is to make India a $5 trillion (€4.5 trillion) economy within five years.

Proudly highlighting the success of his party in power, Modi added: " In 2019, I was amazed, the mood of the people of the country had changed, disappointment had turned into optimism, dreams became connected with desire and everyone was on the same page that this country can change". "India will have a chief of defense staff", Modi said.

He also made a pitch for restructuring India's electoral system so that state and lower house of Parliament elections are held simultaneously rather than on separate timetables.
