Greenland tells Trump: 'We're not for sale'

"We should do much more business than we're doing", Trump told reporters, repeating his personal support for fellow right-leaning Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is leading the Brexit process.

But it wouldn't be the first time an American leader tried to buy the world's largest island.

The trip was reportedly to dicuss economic development and promoting long-term peace they are "concerned about activities of other nations, including China, that do not share these same commitments", the Wall Street Journal reported.

As with so many things that come out of the White House, it's hard to tell if this is something the President is serious about or whether it's another one of those random, insane ideas he gets that White House staff must nonetheless take seriously.

Well, according to a number of Danish politicians, the aides shouldn't bother wasting their time. "It must be an April Fool's Day joke.but totally out of [season]!".

Søren Espersen of the nationalist Danish People's party said that if the story was true, "it is definitive proof that [Trump] has gone insane. I have to tell it like it is: the thought of Denmark selling 50,000 of its citizens to the United States of America is completely insane", Espersen told Ritzau. It still relies on Denmark for foreign affairs, security and financial policy.

Greenland's government on Friday dismissed the idea of being purchased by the United States. "What do you guys think about that?"

There was no official comment from the White House, and the Danish embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to AFP's request for comment.

The U.S. regards the rise of China as a growing threat to its worldwide influence.

Some Trump advisers say acquiring Greenland, which is northeast of Canada, could be good for the U.S., while others call it only a "fleeting fascination" of the president, the Wall Street Journal said.

China has also been eyeing Greenland's rich mineral resources, including uranium and rare earths, as well as Greenland's close proximity to the Arctic shipping lanes, according to a January 2018 editorial by state-run media Xinhua. Greenland is an autonomous country that forms part of Denmark.

The officials have also added that President Trump will discuss Afghanistan and the peace plan with the Taliban.

Martin Lidegaard, senior lawmaker of the Danish Social Liberal Party, said Trump's reported directive has the potential to be extremely unsafe.

"We are talking about real people and you can't just sell Greenland like an old colonial power", he told Reuters.
