Hong Kong Airport Shutdown

Hong Kong Airport Shutdown

Police fired volleys of tear gas at protesters across the territory on Sunday and staged baton charges in flashpoints in downtown Hong Kong and in working-class districts.

"All other flights have been cancelled for the rest of today", the airport statement said.

Thousands of people swarmed inside the worldwide airport as the city braces for more violence between pro-democracy activists and riot police.

"Youngspiration hereby urge governments of the world and all freedom-loving people on Earth, to stand against China, the Enemy of Humanity, and its executioners, the Hong Kong Police Force and the incompetent Carrie Lam government", it said.

A woman received a facial injury during a standoff between protesters and police in Tsim Sha Tsui in Hong Kong on August 11, 2019, in the latest opposition to a planned extradition law that was quickly evolved into a wider movement for democratic reforms.

The protests have since then grown to encompass a wide range of grievances about the future of Hong Kong.

"Airport operations at Hong Kong International Airport have been seriously disrupted as a result of the public assembly at the airport today", the statement said.

At the peak of the demonstrations, thousands of protesters crowded the worldwide hub airport, carrying posters and spray-painting slogans on the airport walls as they tried to paralyze the airports and make their case to foreigners visiting the city-state. Some protesters were seen walking toward the airport amid the stifling heat.

They fired tear gas on shopping streets and in subway stations, with protesters hurling bricks and spraying riot police with fire extinguishers and water hoses.

Hong Kong called former deputy police commissioner Lau Yip-shing out of retirement last week to handle major upcoming public events including celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in October.

In a statement Monday, Youngspiration, an opposition political party which has been heavily involved in the protests, called for sanctions against Lam and other top officials, echoing demands by others that the global community act on behalf of the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement.

Police arrested anti-extradition bill protesters amid the chaos, following petrol bombs explosions and make-shift steel used barricades to block off roads. As protests grew increasingly violent, China has pointed to the appearance of US flags as evidence of foreign involvement.

Journalist Elaine Yu ended her report of the clashes with a tweet saying, "I've interviewed at least seven people at protests who started crying when they talked about how much they loved this place and why they are fighting for it".

The mostly young black-clad protesters have chanted slogans such as "No rioters, only tyranny!" and "Liberate Hong Kong!" while approaching travellers with flyers describing their demands and explaining the unrest. "We'll continue to fight.but we're also going to be smart and wear them down".

"Hong Kong's radical demonstrators have repeatedly used extremely risky tools to attack police officers, which already constitutes a serious violent crime, and also shows the first signs of terrorism emerging", said Yang Guang, spokesman for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council.

However, China's Civil Aviation Authority issued a warning to Cathay Pacific about the involvement of its staff in "riots".

As thousands like Ting and Tsang brought traffic to a standstill on Hong Kong island, smaller simultaneous demonstration at Sham Shui Po in Kowloon were the first to be hit with police teargas.

Outside in the streets of Hong Kong, crowds picketed a police station, singing hymns.
