Guards Responsible For Epstein Were Reportedly Working Extreme Overtime Shifts During Death

Barr said he was "appalled" and "angry" to learn of the Metropolitan Correctional Center's "failure to adequately secure this prisoner". On July 24, Epstein was reportedly found injured and semi-conscious in his prison cell with marks on his neck.

The New York Times is reporting staff did not make mandatory 30 minute checks on Epstein.

The Times spoke to the official on the condition of anonymity.

The New York City medical examiner's office hasn't determined his manner of death.

Jail protocols requiring routine checks on the well-being of accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein appear to have not been followed in the hours before the millionaire was found hanging in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City, sources told ABC News on Sunday.

Giuffre's attorney, Sigrid McCawley, said Epstein's "suicide" so quickly after the documents were unsealed "is no coincidence".

Epstein had been jailed since early July, when he pleaded not guilty to charges by NY federal prosecutors after an indictment accused him of running a sex trafficking ring of underage girls, some as young as 14.

Meanwhile, the New York City medical examiner's office completed an autopsy on the body of Epstein, saying his cause of death was "pending further information at this time".

Sampson said that private pathologist, Dr. Michael Baden, was permitted to observe the autopsy examination at the request of those representing Epstein, and with the awareness of the federal prosecutor. "This is routine practice", Barbara Sampson, the city's chief medical examiner, said in a August 11 statement.

But while a formal determination has not yet been made, multiple people briefed on the investigation said suicide remains the presumed manner of death, according to NBC News.

Barr also noted the case against Epstein was important to the Department of Justice, himself personally, prosecutors with the Southern District of NY as well as the victims.

Epstein was allowed to plead guilty to lesser Florida state prostitution-related charges, serving 13 months in jail. Geoffrey Berman said. He noted in a statement Saturday that the indictment against Epstein includes a conspiracy charge, suggesting others could face charges in the case.

The details of how Jeffrey Epstein died in his Manhattan jail cell over the weekend have yet to be released, but medical officials have performed an autopsy on the high-profile inmate accused of sexually abusing underage girls and paying them hundreds of dollars in cash for massages.

Surveillance video of Jeffrey Epstein's apparent suicide does not exist, according to a new report.

Julie K. Brown, the Herald investigative reporter whose reporting led to the case being reopened, said she was surprised at Epstein's death.
