Congress 'fear-mongering' over Article 370: Jitendra Singh

Ever since India announced a move to strip Kashmir of its autonomy one week ago, residents of this disputed region have been unable to make phone calls, access the Internet or move freely.

Amid massive security arrangements, Jammu and Kashmir on Monday marked its first Eid after the revocation of its special status, even as the state administration held a meeting with local clerics to oversee prayer arrangements and ensure peaceful celebrations.

The government has called for the festival to be observed in a "simple manner" this year, to express solidarity with Kashmiris living on the Indian side of the divided region.

Pakistan said that with the support of China, it will take up India's unilateral actions in Kashmir with the U.N. Security Council and may approach the U.N. Human Rights Commission over what it says is the "genocide" of the Kashmiri people.

Dilbag Singh, the Jammu and Kashmir police chief, on Sunday said the curfew had been eased ahead of the Muslims festival of Eid ul-adha today.

Pakistan said Modi's actions were in breach of worldwide law and violated a United Nations pledge to eventually hold a plebiscite to determine the future status of the region, which it still deems as "disputed" between the two countries.

India's decision caught Pakistan off-guard with Pakistan planning to take the issue to worldwide institutions like the global Court of Justice (ICJ).

A Kashmiri protester waves a flag as Indian authorities in a helicopter monitor a protest after prayers in Srinagar on Monday.

Islamabad has been infuriated by New Delhi's moves and has expelled the Indian ambassador, halted what little bilateral trade exists and suspended cross-border transport services.

His comments came as India's main opposition leader, Rahul Gandhi, on Saturday demanded a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the situation in Kashmir, saying there are reports of violence and people dying.

The Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said "regrettably, Kashmir is going through some upsetting incidents committed against innocent people, which are against global regulations".

The Canadian government says it is following developments in Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan had chose to take the issue to the UN Security Council, he said and added, China had assured full support for it.

Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday criticized the BJP for ending most of the provisions of Article 370 and said that if Jammu and Kashmir had been a Hindu majority state, the saffron party would not have taken away the special status of this state.

Experts have predicted the move would trigger conflict with Pakistan, which has a competing claim to the Muslim-majority region, and reignite an insurgency that has already cost tens of thousands of lives.

Pakistan is deeply concerned about the escalation of tensions in the region, he said, adding, "As an important country in the region and the Muslim world, the Islamic Republic of Iran can play a positive role in the settlement of the Kashmir dispute".

More than 300 regional leaders and activists remain in various forms of detention.
