Serena Williams beats Naomi Osaka in rematch

Osaka said she played too defensively, something she said was hard to avoid when Williams was hitting 31 winners.

Williams advances to a final at a WTA event, outside of the four Grand Slams, for the first time in over three years, since winning the Internazionali BNL d'Italia over compatriot Madison Keys in May of the 2016 season.

However, Osaka - playing more tentatively in windy conditions - sent a forehand long to give Williams, a three-time victor of the tournament, a break in the eighth game.

"She just did everything well, she had a really good game plan and she was moving great", said Williams. "I just went out there and I never gave up because it's not over until it's over". "I know her game".

"This is someone that I looked up to forever", said the two-time Grand Slam champion. "I knew what I needed to do to hopefully try to get a win today, and it helped a little bit".

There was no repeat of the scenes that marred last year's Grand Slam final in NY when Williams was docked a game after clashing with umpire Carlos Ramos, calling him a "thief" and accusing him of double standards that favored male competitors.

For Andreescu, who is competing for the first time since withdrawing from the French Open with a shoulder injury, the win was her first two-set victory all week after having spent more time on court than any other player.

That result meant Osaka, who later lost to Williams, will replace Ashleigh Barty atop the world rankings.

Osaka referred to Williams as her tennis mum in the build-up to the match.

Victory in Canada sees Williams claim her first win against Osaka, who still leads their personal rivalry 2-1.

Osaka was booed by some fans during the awards ceremony and later dubbed what should have been her moment of glory "a little bittersweet".

"I honestly don't really think there was ups and downs", Osaka said.

Williams was in a battle from the outset against the 21-year-old Czech, who showed no nerves despite playing her first WTA semi-final against a player who was her role model growing up.

In Toronto: Sofia Kenin bt Elina Svitolina 7-6 (2), 6-4; Bianca Andreescu bt Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 2-6, 6-4.
