No end in sight for Hong Kong protests as further rallies staged

Hong Kong is seething, and it's draining multiple billions from the wealthy elite.

The protesters had earlier taken part in an unauthorized rally at the Maple Street Playground before marching through the district.

Police denied the protesters a permit for a second rally in the working-class Sham Shui Po neighborhood, but the pro-democracy advocates whose protests are now in their third month defied authorities in both locations, and staged additional actions in several other parts of the territory.

There was no police presence at any of the demonstration points in the afternoon and the atmosphere remained jovial and calm, with people even bringing their dogs. But sizable battles between masked and hard hat-fitted protesters and police continue.

A former British colony, Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997 under the principle of "one country, two systems", which promises the city certain democratic rights not afforded to people on the mainland.

In Hong Kong, more protests are planned on August 11 after another night of clashes between protesters and local police.

"I don't think that leaking an American diplomat's private information, pictures, names of their children - I don't think that is a formal protest, that is what a thuggish regime would do", State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said at a news briefing in Washington on Thursday.

Many protesters said they had come out in anger over the arrest of Hong Kong Baptist University student union president Keith Fong on Tuesday on suspicion of carrying an "offensive weapon".

"China has a long record of broken commitments; it's their duty under the Vienna Conventions, to which China is a party, to treat our diplomats and consular officers with due respect and take all appropriate steps to prevent any attack on their person, freedom or dignity", she said.

Beijing officials have blamed the unrest in Hong Kong on "black hands" from the USA, with a Communist party-controlled newspaper accusing an American diplomat of meeting with protesters under the headline "Foreign Forces Intervene". The announcement also stated that "China will safeguard national sovereignty and Hong Kong's prosperity and stability is unwavering and opposes any country, organization, and individual to interfere in Hong Kong affairs in any way".

In a statement on Sunday, the Hong Kong government strongly condemned protesters' acts on Saturday night, stressing that their behaviour "are not only illegal but also disregarding public order and the needs of other members of the public".

Protesters also set up barricades using traffic barricades and umbrellas near the Kowloon-side exit of the Cross-Harbour Tunnel, leaving before riot police arrived on Saturday.

"I hope the chaotic situation will subside and we can get back to our normal days as soon as possible", she said. "At this moment what is right for Hong Kong.is to stop the violence, and to say no to the chaotic situation that Hong Kong has experienced in the last few weeks, so that we can move on". This is the tenth consecutive weekend of pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong.

The extradition proposals would have allowed some suspects to be sent to mainland China for trials. The US House speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday praised the radical protesters, saying they "are sending a stirring message to the world".
