Trump has ‘huge appetite’ for trade deal with the United Kingdom, says Raab

Mr Raab said: "We had a preliminary chat".

The latest exchanges followed reports from Brussels that European Union officials had concluded that Mr Johnson's new government had no intention of negotiating and that its "central scenario" was a no-deal break on October 31.

Mr Raab is due to meet his U.S. counterpart, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in Washington today but the face time with Mr Trump and his deputy was unannounced beforehand. "We value it enormously and we really appreciate, both from the administration but also from the personal remarks you and the President made, that the friendship that we have between the United Kingdom and the USA is something that we prize and we look forward to nurturing in the weeks, months and years ahead".

Mr Donohoe added: "The Chancellor affirmed what Prime Minister (Boris) Johnson had said in relation to the Withdrawal Agreement and in relation to the view that the backstop can not form part of that Withdrawal Agreement".

Forty-five Republican senators signed a letter to Mr. Johnson expressing their willingness to back a bilateral trade deal.

"If there is a deal, we are going to enter into several years of negotiations on a new free trade agreement with the United Kingdom and a new economic and security partnership".

Will EU capitals look at the withdrawal agreement again, and perhaps change the terms of the Brexit negotiation mandate they have given to the European Commission in order to offer concessions?

Mr. Raab made the rounds in Washington this week and spoke briefly with Mr. Trump on the sidelines of scheduled meetings with Vice President Mike Pence and National Security Adviser John R. Bolton.

Trade Secretary Liz Truss is in Washington to meet figures including secretary of commerce Wilbur Ross.

'Having already laid the groundwork, we are fast-tracking this deal so that businesses are able to take advantage of the golden opportunity to increase trade with the United States as soon as possible'. Speaking during his visit to Northern Ireland yesterday, Mr Varadkar said: "There are people who have perhaps become frustrated with the Brexit process and they are nearly saying to themselves "you know, at least if we have no deal on October 31 it's all over and it's all done".

The US is the UK's biggest individual trading partner, with around $64.4 billion of westward exports in 2018.

"It is simply saying "No, we don't want to talk".

Stressing his desire for a trade deal, he said: 'We're going to get it done'.

Standing at Raab's side, Pompeo said Washington supports London's "sovereign choice" in withdrawing from the European Union, whatever happens. It needs an agreement very soon.
