Tottenham make bid for Arsenal transfer target Philippe Coutinho

The Brazilian came to Barcelona on a 142 million euros switch from Liverpool in January of 2018 but has failed to live up to expectations.

However, Arsenal appear to have entered the race late on and could now seal the deal before Thursday's 5pm transfer deadline. Arsenal are keen on offloading him though, with Bordeaux looking into a potential deal.

However, speaking after Arsenal's 2-1 friendly defeat to Barca, Emery insisted no discussions have been held between the two clubs over the transfer of the former Liverpool hitman.

Arsenal's Spanish head coach Unai Emery takes a training session at Arsenal's Colney training centre in St. Albans on May 21, 2019.

Barça aren't anxious and believe, should a move to the Premier League fall through, another European side will offer Coutinho an escape route.

"We've never talked about Coutinho".

"So he has made decisions in regards to the personalities he wants and he's gone after and pursed this talent, so that's a gamble because we know there is a weakness and only time will tell if he's got that right". Coutinho was an unused substitute in that game. Coutinho often attracted loud criticism from the Camp Nou faithful.

With Barcelona still hopeful of securing Neymar's return from Paris Saint-Germain, the La Liga champions need to trim their wage bill.

The Gunners have already spent a club-record £72million on winger Nicolas Pepe but L'Equipe claim manager Unai Emery will further add to his forward line with the capture of the unsettled Brazilian.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finished as the Premier League's joint top-scorer with 22 goals and the Gabon striker will have to maintain that prolific form if Arsenal are to erase the bitter taste of last season's swoon.

Arsenal new signing Dani Ceballos is facing a race against time to return to full fitness ahead of the Gunners' season-opener against Newcastle on Sunday, August 11.
