Rouhani says Iran favors talks but United States must lift sanctions

Rouhani said the U.S. made a mistake when it thought "everything will be over" for Iran after "some planned a street riot" in December 2017.

He criticized U.S. sanctions imposed on him on Wednesday, saying Washington had closed the door to diplomacy over Iran's 2015 nuclear deal, which U.S. President Donald Trump exited previous year.

But "unfortunately, simultaneous with Iran and France's attempts to reduce tensions and create favourable conditions for peaceful coexistence in the region, we witness escalatory moves from the US", Rouhani told Macron.

Britain says it remains committed, along with European Union allies, to maintaining the Iran nuclear deal - unlike the US.

Tensions began in June when the United States accused Iran of shooting down a USA reconnaissance aircraft and came close to launching strikes against the country.

Iran seized a British-flagged tanker on July 19, apparently in retaliation for Britain taking an Iranian tanker at Gibraltar.

"The murky secondary or black market for oil in and around the Strait of Hormuz is naturally an unregulated phenomenon", Dr Theodore Karasik, senior adviser to Gulf State Analytics in Washington, said.

"A strait for a strait". The mission will see the Royal Navy working alongside the United States navy to assure the security of merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

European allies, many of which blame Washington in part for the tensions by abandoning the 2015 nuclear agreement with Tehran, have been reluctant to sign on to the US proposal for joint operations to protect shipping in the heavily trafficked waterway.

In its statement Sunday, the Revolutionary Guard portrayed its seizure of the vessel as part of its "operations to detect and fight against organized smuggling".

The US announced the mission to protect merchant vessels passing through the strait after Iran seized the British-flagged Stena Impero and the Panama-flagged MZ Riah in the thoroughfare last month.

Last month Britain, while still led by former prime minister Theresa May, proposed a European-led maritime protection force.

Earlier on Monday, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Tehran would no longer tolerate "maritime offences" in the strait. Germany has declined to join the mission.

Britain has deployed a destroyer HMS Duncan and a frigate HMS Montrose to the Gulf to accompany UK-flagged vessels through the strait.

"I believe Iran has more stamina than the U.S. believes".

Iran would argue that all of these incidents are responses, or deny that it had even carried out some of them.

'The boats of the IRGC navy were patrolling the area to control traffic and detect illicit trade when they seized the tanker, ' Fars quoted Zirahi as saying, adding that the seizure was in coordination with Iran's judicial authorities.

Iran and the United States have been locked in a battle of nerves since May 2018 when President Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. from a landmark 2015 deal placing limits on Iran's nuclear programme and began reimposing sanctions.

Fears of a direct US-Iranian conflict have risen since May with several suspected attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf, Iran's downing of a US surveillance drone, and a plan for US air raids on Iran in June that Trump called off at the last minute.

Tehran has declared it will breach some of the restrictions on its nuclear programme imposed in the 2015 agreement, unless other parties to the deal, the Europeans in particular, compensate Iran for the economic impact of USA withdrawal.
