Third round of short-range missiles fired by North Korea, says South

North Korea says that a test-firing it conducted this week was of a battlefield weapon new to its arsenal, contradicting a South Korean assessment that the launch on Wednesday was of a pair of previously known short-range ballistic missiles.

Tens of thousands of United States troops are still garrisoned in South Korea.

"That said, today's launches seem to track with the behavior North Korea has shown vis-a-vis the US over the past few months of escalating pressure without crossing the line".

"The firing of these missiles don't violate the pledge that Kim Jong Un made to the president about intercontinental-range ballistic missiles", Mr Bolton told the Fox Business Network.

Trump was asked at the White House before setting off for a campaign trip to OH if he thought Kim was testing him by carrying out what appeared to be a third missile test in recent days. "We never made an agreement on that". We'll see what happens.

North Korea's KN-23 short-range ballistic missile in particular appears to be built to avoid detection. "They are very standard". Some experts believe the North may continue to ignore Jo's apparent defection to avoid highlighting the vulnerabilities of its government while it engages in negotiations with Washington to leverage its nuclear arsenal for economic and security benefits.

Pyongyang fired short-range missiles.

In the latest incident, the man was first detected late at around midnight on Wednesday near the Imjin river, which flows from North Korea into South Korea across the DMZ on the west of the peninsula. "We're still waiting to hear from North Korea".

"Look, everybody tries to get ready for negotiations and create leverage, and create risk for the other side", he told Bloomberg TV. North Korea's foreign ministry warned earlier this month that the drills could force the regime to reconsider its moratorium on major weapons tests.

A summit between Trump and Kim in Vietnam in February collapsed after the two sides failed to reconcile differences between United States demands for North Korea's complete denuclearisation and North Korean demands for sanctions relief.

The North Korea launches have appeared meant to put pressure on South Korea and the USA to stop planned military exercises and offer other concessions, analysts said.

A senior US defense official said on Wednesday that the United States did not plan to make changes to the drills, despite the pressure from Pyongyang. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations meetings in Bangkok this week would've been the secretary of state's first chance since June to hold working-level meetings with the North Koreans and he even brought along top nuclear envoy, Stephen Biegun.

The UN Security Council is expected to discuss the latest launches during a closed-door meeting Thursday.

The launch was the second of its kind in less than a week amid another slowdown in denuclearization-for-peace talks between the United States and North Korea.

The latest launches appeared meant to put pressure on South Korea and the United States to stop planned military exercises, analysts said.
