Former AWS software engineer arrested over massive Capital One data leak

Capital One has announced a data breach that has exposed the personal information of 106 million people that includes transaction data, credit scores, payment history, balances, and for some, linked bank accounts and social security numbers.

The breach is expected to cost between $100 million USA and $150 million in 2019, mainly due to customer notifications, credit monitoring and legal support, Capital One said.

"Importantly, no credit card account numbers or log-in credentials were compromised and over 99% of social security numbers were not compromised", the bank said.

A statement by the USA attorney's office in Washington said: "On July 17 2019, a GitHub user who saw the post alerted Capital One to the possibility it had suffered a data theft". "I sincerely apologize for the understandable worry this incident must be causing those affected".

Capital One, based in McLean, Virginia, said Monday it found out about the vulnerability in its system July 19 and immediately sought help from law enforcement to catch the perpetrator.

Thompson, who used the nickname "erratic" online, also posted about the Capital One data access on a Slack channel associated with a Meetup group that she's listed as the organiser for, expounding on her use of the admin commands on Capital One's S3 account.

The suspect, a 33-year-old former Seattle technology company software engineer identified as Paige Thompson, made her initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Seattle on Monday, the U.S. Attorney's office said.

Like Equifax, Capital One said that it would be providing free credit monitoring and identity protection to everyone involved.

"We expect the incident to generate incremental costs of approximately $100 to $150 million in 2019".

Thompson was able to gain access by exploiting a misconfigured web application firewall, the DOJ said.

The data primarily consisted of credit card applications that included names, addresses, zip codes/postal codes, phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth and self-reported income.

She appeared in court in Seattle on Monday and will be detained pending a hearing on August 1.

The intrusion into Capital One's servers occurred in March, according to the criminal complaint filed against Thompson.

How has Capital One reacted?

.

According to the US Department of Justice, computer fraud and abuse is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Capital One CEO Richard D. Fairbank issued an apology to customers on behalf of the bank.
