Trump defended for criticising congressman over 'rat-infested' district

Earlier in July, the U.S. leader attacked four racial and ethnic minority Democratic congresswomen in remarks Democrats and a number of Republicans also called racist.

On Sunday, Trump was unbowed by denunciations of his comments, tweeting "there is nothing wrong with bringing out the very obvious fact that Congressman Elijah Cummings has done a very poor job for his district and the City of Baltimore".

"Mr. Cummings [was] saying that children were sleeping or sitting in their own feces. If you go online, you can see the questioning that Elijah Cummings did of Kevin McAleenan [the acting secretary of Homeland Security] regarding the conditions at the border".

Trump's comments came in the form of tweets that focused on Democratic Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland, a vocal critic of the Trump administration and the head of the House Oversight Committee.

Trump, seemingly borrowing from a Fox & Friends segment on the same topic, tweeted that Cummings' district is "FAR WORSE and more dangerous" than conditions at the border. "Normally when a new mayor comes into office whether through a mayor resigning or whatever they get a letter from the President congratulating him and offering to meet with them and find out their priorities".

Asked by a reporter whether he thought Trump was racist, Owens said he found that "hard to believe", but said the president could do more to address racism in the country, "absolutely".

One of the lawmakers, Rashida Tlaib, charged Sunday that Trump does not even care about doing things to help the country. Must have intimidated Comcast/NBC.

Trump continued his criticism of Cummings by tweeting a video posted by comedian Terrence K Williams.

Speaking at an event in Baltimore later, the civil rights activist again responded to Mr Trump's comments. "Yes, I make trouble for bigots", Sharpton said.

Many Republicans have refrained from criticising Mr Trump over his remarks.

Michael Steele, the state's former lieutenant governor who went on to serve as the national chairman of the Republican National Committee, said it was "reprehensible to talk about the city the way" Trump did, but he hoped the attention would elevate the conversation about how to help urban areas, and he invited the president to be a part of the conversation.

In a video shared by The Hill, Elizabeth Warren - another presidential candidate - added that President Trump's "racist" remarks were "insulting both to the congressman and to the people he represents". "You want to be on his team". So just show up. Wallace showed the tweets, summarizing the attack, and then followed with some statistics about the district, including median household income.

Trump on Monday also attacked Rev. Al Sharpton, the NY politico who now hosts a show on MSNBC.

"I think enough is enough".

Trump issued a series of sharply worded tweets aimed at Cummings-the current chairman of the House Oversight Committee and frequent adversary of the president's.

"If the Democrats are going to defend the Radical Left "Squad" and King Elijah's Baltimore Fail, it will be a long road to 2020", Trump tweeted on Monday.

After many criticized POTUS' tweets, Trump fired back, saying, "Dems always play the race card".

Benn Ray, who lives in the Remington neighborhood of Baltimore City and is the co-owner of Atomic Books in neighboring Hampden, said Trump "hasn't ingratiated himself to the city, he hasn't made himself welcome".

"Our President has a hate agenda".
