Look up: Dueling meteor showers to light up sky Monday night

On July 29, the Southern Delta Aquariids (also known as the Delta Aquarids) and the Alpha Capricornids are set to peak at the same time. It's best to watch from areas with a minimal amount of artificial light.

The public has the possibility to see three active meteor showers, with the first two mentioned below reaching their peak Monday night.

The heavens are bustling with a couple of meteor showers and a black moon.

The Southern delta Aquariids - which lack fireballs (sorry, Dragon Ball Z Fans) and trains - will appear best to those who reside in the southern tropics, and will remain active until August 23. "In less than 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adapt and you will begin to see meteors".

Astronomers Bruce McClure and Deborah Byrd of EarthSky.org explained: "Late July 2019 - around July 28 - presents the nominal peak of the Delta Aquariid meteor shower".

A combination of 20 to 25 meteors will be visible per hour, as long as clouds do not interfere with viewing conditions. The comet Swift-Tuttle orbits the sun once every 133 years, so every August, the Earth passes through the comet's debris field.

Once you find a suitable location and pack some tasty treats, water and blankets, look for the constellation Aquarius and its brightest star Delta Aquarii.

Together, viewers could see a potential 21 meteors per hour.

The Alpha Capricornids are active through August 15 and will bring about five meteors per hour.

The Perseids, which peak between August 11 and 13, can be seen coming from the northern hemisphere.

To see the meteors, get as far away from lights as possible after midnight.
