Harry Styles playing Prince Eric in the Little Mermaid: They're only rumours!

Following Disney's casting announcement for the role of Ariel in their live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, The Hollywood Reporter stated that Harry Styles is rumored to portray Prince Eric.

Styles recently lost out the role of Elvis in an upcoming Baz Luhrmann film to Austin Butler, but a prince isn't a bad second place to the King.

As BroadwayWorld previously reported, Halle Bailey has been cast as Ariel in the studio's remake of their 1989 classic film.

He is apparently an early favourite of Disney to play the role and is now in discussions with the studio. And given how he was cast in Christopher Nolan's (who is a perfectionist in every sense of the word) movie in the traditional way everyone else is cast, it goes to show that he has the acting chops required to pull off hard roles.

He can really act: When Styles auditioned for the role of Alex in Christopher Nolan's drama, "Dunkirk", the director didn't know much about his background. Rob Marshall is directing the live-action/CGI feature from a script by David Magee.

When "The Little Mermaid" first hit theaters virtually 30 years in the past, it grew to become an enormous hit and was credited with sparking a Disney renaissance. Some believe the role of Ursula should have gone to singer Lizzo instead of McCarthy.

Marshall will also produce alongside Marc Platt, John DeLuca and Hamilton creator/star Lin-Manuel Miranda. The musical crab fronts two key songs in the original movie and is one of the more popular characters thanks to his laid back Jamaican accent.

Production on the new version of The Little Mermaid is due to begin in 2020, with a release date still to be confirmed.
