Race becomes new flashpoint with Pelosi, Ocasio-Cortez

Rep. William Lacy Clay, a Democrat from Missouri, slammed freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday, saying she unfairly played "the race card" in a spat with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

An earlier caption mistakenly said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, is a Republican.

Here was Clay, speaking forcefully on Chakrabarti's since-deleted Tweet: "It shows you how ignorant and little history he knows, how ignorant he is to American history". "I said what I'm going to say in the caucus".

Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., said comparing the detention camps to Nazi concentration camps - a pointed swipe at Ocasio-Cortez, who has used the analogy - doesn't help solve the problem.

Moderate members argued that it was important to pass a Senate version of the legislation when it appeared that the upper chamber would refuse to take up the House bill, while progressives railed against the process and insisted that lawmakers were not doing enough to negotiate for and ensure adequate protections for migrant children detained at the border.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez said Rep. Pelosi's words about their Twitter followers is not irrelevant but actual public opinion. And Jay Powell said, 'Well you're right.

"To even insinuate that I, or any other member of the New Dems, would promote policies that are racist and hateful or ones that would negatively impact communities of color is deeply offensive and couldn't be further from the truth", Sewell said.

Though one wishes this needless distraction could conclude, and soon, so that the Democratic majority in the House could go about its business rather than publicly bickering, that, sadly, isn't likely to happen.

The four progressive freshman members of her party voted against the $4.6 billion border funding bill last month.

Ocasio-Cortez shot back with a tweet criticizing Pelosi. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., have to learn when it comes to being "effective legislators".

'Instead of 'fiscally conservative but socially liberal, ' let's call the New Democrats and Blue Dog Caucus the 'New Southern Democrats.' They certainly seem hell bent to do to black and brown people today what the old Southern Democrats did the 40s, ' he wrote on Saturday.

"We respect the value of every member of our caucus", she said.

"Can we just talk about the issues we're dealing with?"

One freshman, Rep. Mikie Sherrill, who won what had been a Republican-held seat in New Jersey, said the centrist lawmakers "work really hard to build broad coalitions". "The people suffered, our courageous men and women at Border Protection, the kids who these Democrats pretend they care so much about". "We have kids in cages", said Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, who said she was frustrated by the ongoing situation. More than a year later, the repercussions of that policy continue to be felt as House Democrats seek additional information on its execution.

The previous day, however she said, "The persistent singling out ... it got to a point where it was just outright disrespectful ... the explicit singling out of newly elected women of color".

First, Ocasio-Cortez has become a Twitter star through her own showboating and a weird alliance with right-wing media that would like to portray her as the poster lady for all Democrats. It has no place in a civil discussion.
