PELOSI: Census Citizenship Question an Attempt to 'Make America White Again'

U.S. President Donald Trump was expected to back down on Thursday on plans to add a contentious citizenship question to the 2020 census, but order the government do the survey by other means, a government official told Reuters. "The Trump administration's effort to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census is unlawful", Dale Ho, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Voting Rights Project, said on Thursday.

There is already a motion asking federal Judge Jesse Furman in NY to totally prohibit the administration changing the census or adding the question in any way.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, playing off of Trump's political slogan of "Make America Great Again", says Trump's attempt to add the question is an effort to "Make America White Again". The more than 20 Democrats vying for their party's nomination to run against Trump question his immigration policies. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in his opinion that a citizenship question may be permissible in the future if the government is able to rationally validate their decision to include the inquiry.

Former President Barack Obama did not eliminate a question about citizenship from the 2010 census, as blogs and social media posts have falsely reported in recent days.

A federal judge in NY is now considering whether Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross concealed his true motivation for adding the question, and another judge in Maryland is considering whether the question is "discriminatory". "The Department of Justice is shifting these matters to a new team of Civil Division lawyers going forward", spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said in a statement.

Rubin wraps up her column with a quote from Tribe, who asserts that Trump's desire to deceive the public about his reasons for wanting a citizenship question is yet another reason why he deserves impeachment.

But [Judge] Furman said that before lawyers can get off a case, court rules require them to explain why they wish to withdraw and that the DOJ request was "patently deficient".

The U.S. Census Bureau is part of the Commerce Department.

"You need it for many reasons".

The ABC News report did not include details on whether Trump would order a new survey or ask the government to use existing surveys to collect citizenship data.

But an Obama-appointed judge in NY said they couldn't right now.

The Justice Department initially said the fight to add the question was over, before Trump intervened and said he wouldn't give up the fight.

No reason was given, but Attorney General William Barr said on Monday that the lawyer who was leading the team, James Burnham, informed him some of the people working on the case preferred "not to continue during this new phase".

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said in an interview on Fox News Channel's "Fox and Friends" Thursday morning that he's expecting Trump to announce an executive order, and said he thinks "it's a good move".
