Serena Williams says therapy helped her get past US Open controversy

Serena Williams says therapy helped her get past US Open controversy

A little less than a year ago, Williams lost the final match in the 2018 U.S. Open to Naomi Osaka. The first heated exchange took place after Ramos accused Williams of receiving instructions from her coach Patrick Mouratoglou, who was up in the stands.

And the Australia-born British tennis star threw away a 4-1 lead in the first set to lose 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 in an error-filled performance.

In an emotional letter published in last year's August issue of Harper's Bazaar magazine, 37-year-old Williams lamented what should have been an "amazing and historic" match.

Williams later revealed she wrote an apology "to the person who deserved it most" - Osaka.

"Finally I realized that there was only one way for me to move forward. Yeah, I don't have much else to say to your question".

When pushed further, she said: "Please don't patronise me".

Osaka is the only woman to capture multiple Slams over the last 2,5 years and she had reached the third round in her last two tries at the All England Club.

Serena Williams was roundly criticised for ruining Naomi Osaka's moment. I turn over, exhausted from lack of sleep, thoughts still spinning in my head. I would love the chance to live that moment over again.

"I don't think you need to pick on me in a harsh way", Johanna Konta told a reporter. "I would never, ever want the light to shine away", she added.

Serena closed with, "I can't wait for your future, and believe me I will always be watching as a big fan!" In the way you're asking your question, you're being quite disrespectful and you're patronising me.

However a number of fans and journos were gobsmacked at the difference between the fines for Fognini and Serena, with numerous opinion that the Italian's actions deserved more. "People can misunderstand anger for strength because they can't differentiate between the two", she said graciously.

Williams's essay appeared online and on her own Instagram account in the middle of her Wimbledon quarter-final defeat of Alison Riske on Tuesday.

Williams, whose total of 97 Wimbledon match wins compares to the 82 combined of the other seven quarter-finalists, will look back on her victory with some relief.

At 4-4, Konta was in danger of losing a fourth game in a row but she saved a break point with another drop shot and went on to hold.

Once Williams received Osaka's response, "tears rolled down" her face.

Riske, who will marry Stephen Amritraj, the son of former Indian Davis Cup player Anand, after Wimbledon, stunned world number one Ash Barty to notch up her 14th win in 15 matches on grass this season.

"It was really, actually, very interesting for me to be on the opposite end, because I felt her up her game and her intensity", Riske said with a smile.

Williams was down a break twice in the opening set but came back both times and broke again in the final game.
