Apple cuts MacBook Air price by $100, gives MacBook Pro chip upgrade

Yes, that notebook was severely outdated with its 5th Gen CPU and ancient design; however, the non-Retina MacBook Air was the last remaining Apple laptop without the troubled Butterfly-switch keyboard. Apple has also outfitted the 13-inch Pro with its Touch Bar, which means that Touch ID is coming along for the ride as well.

A series of reports mentioned the 16-inch MacBook Pro in the past few weeks, without revealing any details about the device. The MacBook Air now starts at $1,099, though if you're a college student, you can snag one for $999. The new model features a 13-inch Retina Display with True Tone, an upgrade to quad-core Intel 8th Gen Core processors, and the Apple T2 Security Chip used to bolster the company's other security features.

After upgrading the premium MacBook Pros a couple of months ago, Apple is preparing for the “back to school” season with a refreshed entry-level Pro and a small upgrade to the Air.

The Apple MacBook Air finally gets a display that can stand alongside the Pro models.

Meanwhile, students can get a $100 discount on MacBook Air, meaning the base model starts at $1,000.

The refreshed MacBook Air now has True Tone technology added to the Retina display, which automatically adjusts the color temperature for a more natural and comfortable viewing experience. The promotion is applicable for college students, their parents, faculty, staff, and home-school teachers through the Apple Education Store.

The new MacBook Air, on the other hand, is unchanged except for the addition of True Tone support.

With these MacBook upgrades, Apple has also kicked off its Back to School promotion. Apple has not formally announced the fate of the previous MacBook Air or 12-inch MacBook, but we have confirmed that these two systems are now discontinued. You can grab a free pair of Beats Studio 3 Wireless headphones with several Mac and MacBook models (including the two new laptops from today, of course).
