World number one Ash Barty crashes out of Wimbledon

Top-seeded Ashleigh Barty was defeated by Alison Riske, an unseeded American challenger. The third set went on serve until Riske was 4-3 and struck the decisive blow with a thumping forehand down the line before holding her nerve to advance in the quarter-finals where she faces the victor of Williams' Centre Court match against Carla Suarez-Navarro. She fell 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 on Manic Monday, when the 32 remaining players compete for a place in the quarterfinals.

Following her stunning match, Riske beamed: "I'm so excited". "I have more matches this week than literally the past five months".

Barty began the match with a whole game of aces but was let down by her serve as the contest worse on.

A silver lining to Barty's premature exit was the fourth-round loss later on Monday of third seed Karolina Pliskova, which guarantees the Queensland the world No.1 ranking until at least the start of the American hardcourt season.

Barty, who returned rejuvenated to the sport after a spell playing cricket, said in stark contrast to her predecessor Japan's Naomi Osaka that being number one had not changed her or added pressure. "I was sticking to how I wanted to play", Barty said.

After withdrawing from her scheduled third-round doubles match on Tuesday citing an arm injury, Barty's bigger concern is getting her mind and body ready for the US Open starting on August 26.

"Overall I didn't play a poor match, but when big moments were there, Alison played better today. I think just being tough has been the key". After beating teenage sensation Coco Gauff in straight sets, Halep faces Zhang Shuai of China as she tries to return to the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time since 2014. "Like, OK, finally I can play tennis".

Longer baseline rallies were a feature of the second set but Riske was always willing to come to the net and she broke for a 3-1 lead.

When Alison Riske joined the Peters Township girls' tennis team back in 2006, she was already one of the country's highest-ranked players for her age group.

"For us it's been an incredible journey to get to this point but it hasn't changed our approach", she said. The 29-year-old was working her angles brilliantly as she ran Barty all around the court and was fearless enough to hit lines - a vast improvement on her opening set showing.

Williams reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, then retired from a match at Indian Wells, withdrew from matches in Miami and Rome, then played at the French Open.

"Well, the last time I faced a fellow American I lost, so I definitely want to do well this time", Williams said. She did it all just 12 days before her wedding to her fiance of three years, Stephen Amritraj, in her hometown of Pittsburgh.

"I never really thought about the numbers till you said it", said the world No.55.
