US looks to complete its French summer with a final win

The United States and the Netherlands were deadlock 0-0 at halftime in the Women's World Cup final, mainly because of Dutch goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal.

However, the Netherlands are hoping to cause a major upset and strike a blow for Europe at just their second World Cup, two years after being crowned European champions on home soil.

Former Dutch worldwide Sarina Wiegman is in charge of the Netherlands side.

Rapinoe has said that she should be fit in time to make coach Jill Ellis' starting line-up for the game in Lyon, as the US aim to win a fourth World Cup in eight editions.

However, despite the defeat, football in the Netherlands is thriving, with TV audience records being smashed during the tournament in France, while supporters at every game painted the town orange during their fan walks to the stadiums. US forward Megan Rapinoe is expected to play for the USA after missing the semifinals, making that task even more challenging.

Both teams arrive to this FIFA World Cup finals after thrilling semifinals victories. It's the first time since 2003 that two women have coached in the World Cup final.

Across the 24 teams that have taken part in the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup, 38 players, one trainer and one coach are out.

But she couldn't stop a 61st minute penalty from captain Megan Rapinoe, who converted from the spot after a high foot on Alex Morgan went to VAR.

And a third honour soon followed as she was received the Golden Ball and was crowned the tournament's best player award ahead of England right-back Lucy Bronze and United States of America team-mate Rose Lavelle.

Then, Megan Rapinoe stepped up for a penalty kick - and netted the tiebreaker, her 50th worldwide goal.

The pink-haired Rapinoe has been one of the stars of the World Cup on and off the field, although she missed her team's 2-1 semi-final win over England due to a hamstring injury.

The victory underlines the USA's status as the dominant force in worldwide women's football as they claim the World Cup for the fourth time in eight editions. She scored twice in a 2-1 upset victory over Japan to open the knockout stage but injured a toe in the celebration and it's bothered her ever since. Rapinoe, who was the first professional white athlete to kneel during the US anthem in protest before US Soccer passed a rule that they all had to stand, was asked in France whether she would go to the White House if invited after a win.

"It certainly is not fair", she said.

Her three assists lifted her above White. "I think that's what I'm most proud of, that we got so much respect from the Netherlands". "Change the U.S. colors to whatever colors Rapinoe's hair is", wrote one Twitter user.

It marked Rapinoe's 50th goal for her country.

At a tournament which has showcased the improving standards of goalkeeping in the women's game, the excellent Van Veenendaal prevented the U.S. from winning by a greater margin.
