Slovenia will get 'Smurfette' Melania statue

Some Twitter users were certain the first lady was making a statement of support for the LGBT community, unlike her husband who failed to recognize the observance of Pride month in his first two years as president and has made an effort prohibit transgender people from serving in the military.

Life-size wooden sculpture of USA first lady Melania Trump is officially unveiled in Rozno, near her hometown of Sevnica, Slovenia July 5, 2019. The figure is dressed in the same color she wore during President Donald Trump's inauguration in January 2017 (inset).

It was commissioned by Brad Downey, a Berlin-based American artist, and sculpted by local folk artist Ales Zupevc.

The life-sized chunky statue was carved from a tree trunk using a chainsaw, so perhaps that explains why it's somewhat lacking in detail or any real likeness to the former model.

Others, however, decided it was a "good idea" to perpetuate the first lady, described as a "Slovenian hero", The Guardian reported.

Downey wrote in his Instagram account that he chose to work with Zupevc because he was born in the same year and the same hospital as Melania Trump.

A local resident said: "If the monument was meant to be a parody, then the artist has been successful".

"Perhaps we are simply trying vigorously to make sense of things that might only be a slapstick prank", it says in a leaflet.

Mr Downey told AFP: "I can understand why people might think that this falls short as a description of her physical appearance". "The sculptor worked a long time on this", one resident told Reuters.

"You see this river that she would have seen as a child, you see the mountains", he said. "Hats off to her", Sevnica resident Katarina Klenovsek said.
