Iran wants to talk with USA after Trump eases 'maximum pressure' campaign

From the Oval Office Monday morning, President Trump signed new sanctions against Iran's leading terrorists and vowed the regime can not obtain a nuclear weapon.

The sanctions have reportedly brought Iran's oil exports down to below 500,000 barrels per day from a high of 2.5 million barrels per day, although Iran today said that those reported export figures were incorrect, without offering new figures. The measures target Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other top Iranian officials.

"Imposing useless sanctions on Iran's Supreme Leader (Ayatollah Ali Khamenei) and the commander of Iran's diplomacy (Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif) is the permanent closure of the path of diplomacy", Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said in a tweet. The Trump administration wants to force Tehran to open talks on its nuclear and missile programmes and its activities in the region. Iran denies it attacked the tankers and says the drone was in its airspace.

Attacks on six tankers in the Gulf of Oman, the shooting down of a United States drone and bombings of a Saudi airport and oil infrastructure have been all attributed to Iran, or Iranian proxy forces in the region.

Mr Trump mentioned Japan's reliance on the Strait in a tweet on Monday, bemoaning the United States protection of shipping lanes.

The U.S. decision is another indication it "has no respect for worldwide law and order", he said.

Trump said "a lot of restraint has been shown by the U.S." when it comes to Iran in the face of recent events. "We know what they've done", the official told reporters, adding that the deterrents would include cameras, binoculars and ships.

Rouhani and his cabinet run Iran's day-to-day affairs, while Khamenei, in power since 1989, is Iran's ultimate authority.

President Trump also warned that the United States has shown restraint after Iran shot down a $180 million U.S. Navy surveillance drone over global waters last week and that the regime shouldn't expect the same in the future.

His words were echoed by Iran's President Hassan Rouhani, who also slammed the sanctions and said that the White House is "afflicted by mental retardation".

Two American officials, however, told The Associated Press that the attack successfully targeted Iran's rocket and missile launch systems.

However, there has been no independent confirmation of damage to Iranian systems. USA officials have not offered comments on the issue.

Iran dismissed the cyber attacks as a failure.

Mr Bolton said "Iran's silence has been deafening", on the proposed talks.

Allies of the United States have been calling for steps to defuse the crisis, saying they fear a small mistake by either side could trigger war.

"We are very concerned". Pompeo met King Salman as well as the king's son, de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

And the US military should not be depended upon to keep the narrow sea routes along Iran's coast free. Recently, Iran quadrupled its production of low-enriched uranium to be on pace to break one of the deal's terms by next week while also threatening to raise enrichment closer to weapons-grade levels on July 7 - if Europe doesn't offer a new deal.

As for Tehran, Trump said, his only demand is that the country not pursue nuclear weapons and halts what the United States claims is backing for terrorist groups.

American media have reported that the USA launched cyber attacks last week even as Trump called off the air strike.

"I was clear about the UK's long-held concerns over Iran's activities in the region", he said.

There was no immediate reaction from Washington early on Tuesday to the remarks from Iran.

Trump said on Sunday he was not seeking war with Iran and would be prepared to seek a deal to bolster its flagging economy, an apparent move to defuse tensions.

"Avoiding further escalation will be hard, given both sides' determination not to back down", wrote Philip Gordon, a scholar at the Council on Foreign Relations in Foreign Affairs magazine. He negotiated the 2015 nuclear deal with the USA and other major powers, and has spearheaded Iranian diplomacy since.
