Kyrie Irving 'Prepared' to Sign With Brooklyn Nets

Kyrie Irving 'Prepared' to Sign With Brooklyn Nets

However, according to the Boston Herald's Steve Bulpett, that's not the case at all.

Irving can't finalize a representation deal with Roc Nation for 15 days, per National Basketball Players Association rules put into place to discourage agents from poaching clients, which would still give Irving's new agent time to prepare for the opening of free agency on June 30.

Kyrie Irving has taken the first step toward his prospective free agency this summer.

Kyrie Irving may already know where he is going to play next season. According to a report by Shams Charania of The Athletic, Irving has decided not to opt into the final year of his contract with the Boston Celtics, one which would pay him $21.3 million for the 2019-20 season. "A separate league source told the Herald that his team (not the Celtics) has received the same information and is operating under the belief that Irving wants to join the Nets", Bulpett wrote.

But the latest report just adds more evidence to the pile that the NBA's elite free agents won't be headed to the Lakers this summer. All Irving would have to do is sign a two-year deal with Boston that has a player option for the 2020-2021 season. It's also possible Boston is trying to keep certain picks out of the deal, such as the Memphis Grizzlies selection next year, which would be either a valuable rebuilding chip if Davis left or a very valuable trade chip to bring in another good player if they convince him to re-sign. Davis's agent, Rich Paul, who also represents LeBron James, doubled down on that notion in an interview in Sports Illustrated this week.

It is widely known that the Celtics have the shiniest collection of assets for a potential Davis deal, but there are questions about how far they would open their treasure chest. That is, if Durant remains in Golden State for one more season.
