Vietnam Seeks Favor with USA by Slapping Tariff on Chinese Imports

By now, Xi Jinping is used to Donald Trump's tariff threats.

"I don't want to put their companies out of business, I want China to do well, I don't want them to do as well as us", Mr. Trump said.

Trump told reporters as he pointed at his head during a White House news conference with Polish President Andrzej Duda.

Mr Trump has repeatedly said he was getting ready to meet Mr Xi at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, but China has not confirmed it. "We had a deal with China and unless they go back to that deal, I have no interest", he said.

The president then criticized Germany for not paying it's fair share in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, and for buying its energy from Russian Federation.

The president also complained that even though he selected four of the Fed's five board members, including elevating Jerome Powell to chairman, "We have people on the Fed that really weren't, you know, they're not my people", Mr. Trump said in a telephone interview with CNBC's "Squawk Box".

Last but not least, the US-China escalating trade war has already had an adverse impact on the rest of the world.

"I think President Xi of China - great relationship with him - I think he'll be there".

Geng said that if the USA was ready to hold "equal consultations" the door was wide open.

Trade negotiations broke down in May and the two sides raised tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of each other's imports.

The United States escalated the dispute in May when it included another $200 billion worth of Chinese goods in the 25 percent tariff category. In a tweet, Trump said on Friday that "The United States of America has reached a signed agreement with Mexico" in which Mexico "has agreed to take strong measures" against illegal immigration into the US.

Trump and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe leave the Akasaka Palace Monday, May 27, 2019, following their afternoon meeting at this Tokyo palace. "At the end of the day, the tariffs are not going to fix our trade deficit with China. We're expected to meet and if we don't that's fine and if we do that's fine".

The United States kicked off a tariff battle with China in 2018, seeking sweeping structural changes from Beijing.

Almost a year after Trump began imposing the higher tariffs to ramp up pressure on Beijing, hopes are focused on a possible top-level compromise to break a stalemate in talks that were suspended last month.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also recently concluded that US tariffs have had a "significant" impact on China, causing the IMF to lower its forecast for China's future growth.

That was despite the USA warning it could still impose tariffs in the future if Mexico failed to satisfy its border control demands.

The United States is seeking sweeping changes, including an end to forced technology transfers and theft of USA trade secrets.
