Brooks Koepka launches his bid for an historic US Open treble today at Pebble Beach, where Tiger Woods once separated himself from all rivals and now returns chasing a 16th major.

And after Woods' dramatic win in April at the Masters, his 15th major but first since 2008, golf analysts predicted the sport would see a surge in interest, from TV ratings to golf equipment sales and rounds played by the public.

Pebble Beach, where Woods won the first of his three US Opens in 2000 with a breathtaking 12-under par total and a crushing 15-stroke margin, is a vastly different player now at 43 and with spinal fusion surgery behind him. There's so many guys that shoot themselves out of it just because it's a major.

"Any time you win a tournament by more than three shots, it's a great performance". And you know you are going to make mistakes, so it's a bit like a boxing match. He proceeded to drive down the middle and make forur with his second ball to get away with a bogey six. There's another of practicing it and then trusting it on the golf course in tournament play.

The scenic, spectacular and testing course has played host to five previous US Opens and the centennial celebration promises to be an incredible event. A tree that seems to be in the middle of the 18th fairway is now only a few paces from the rough on the right because of how much the fairway was narrowed. It's not very tricky.

"How you put the ball in the correct position is key". I shoot 2-under on the bad days and 6-, 7-under on the good days. "And if I ever join that crowd - and the only way to do that is to win a U.S. Open - it would redefine my career". The last time the U.S. Open was at Pebble, he had a three-shot lead going into the final round until he rushed his way through a triple bogey, a double bogey, and a bogey before he reached the fifth hole. "I just need to shoot something in the 60s and I'll be good for the weekend. It's a handsome place". And he's aware of all the things that can conspire against you.

"Everybody gets off at some point in their career, and if I can make this kind of - if this is the past year or so results-wise, off for me, then - and I can use these kind of blueprints of how I've gotten back as kind of my set places to go to, then things should stay in place a lot easier and not get as far off", Spieth said. Hopefully over time that self-reinforcement of positivity will sooner or later go into my golf game and give me confidence.

"Because I'd bogeyed the last two holes", Johnson said with a wry smile.

Despite his disappointment in the 2010 US Open, he remains a fan of the course and a favorite to contend.

A pair of dramatic finishes has made for a three-way tie at the top in the U.S. Open, where friendly conditions are helping players go low. That was the reason for putting that extra wedge in. It's not necessarily something I think about or worry about.

"Where I grew up in Northern Spain, it's somewhat similar to California". I'm comfortable reading those greens.

Scott Piercy has birdied the 14th hole at Pebble Beach to take the early lead in the first round of the U.S. Open.
