Huawei Shouldn't Be Cut off from Android - Google Shares Its Fears

Facebook has restricted Huawei's ability to bundle its apps on new smartphones, as the US ban on the Chinese technology company continues to escalate.

The search giant's senior executives are pushing for an exemption from the Huawei blacklisting, which basically banned United States companies from doing business with the Chinese company, the Financial Times reported Thursday.

From the consumer side, this won't be a huge difference - users will still be able to install Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram from the Play Store, and receive updates for them.

While users will still be able to access Google Play and download these popular apps - at least, for now - Huawei will not be able to load the apps out of the box. According to Reuters, the new ban applies only for unreleased Huawei phones.

Facebook is reportedly planning to stop Chinese tech giant Huawei from pre-installing its applications on future Huawei smartphones.

The US restrictions against Huawei are the result of an executive order issued in May by Trump, which prevents companies from countries listed as "foreign adversaries" from accessing American technology without government approval.

Huawei's placement on the Commerce Department's Entity List means that it can not obtain parts, components, and software from USA companies without a license issued by the United States government.

Google is among the tech companies lobbying the Trump administration to exempt it from a ban on exports to Huawei and avoid a shutdown of services.

However, before we speculate too much, it's worth noting that it remains to be seen if the Huawei ban will stand after the 90-day respite. Under the order, US suppliers are able to appeal for special approval to continue selling to Huawei.

The US administration in May added Huawei to a trade blacklist. A trio of sources tells the publication that Google has asked the US government for permission to continue supplying Huawei without having to obtain a license from authorities.

While Google's points are valid, Huawei Oak OS has the potential to replace Google's licensed Android on non-Huawei phones as well.

"Google has been arguing that by stopping it from dealing with Huawei, the USA risks creating two kinds of operating systems: the genuine version and a hybrid one".
