Senate Republicans Warn White House Against Mexico Tariffs

Among the talking points ahead of a meeting at the White House to stave of threatened tariffs are USA demands that Mexico rapidly expand a program under which it receives Central American asylum seekers awaiting hearings in the United States, the sources said, asking not to be identified.

"Talks with Mexico will resume tomorrow with the understanding that, if no agreement is reached, Tariffs at the 5% level will begin on Monday, with monthly increases as per schedule", the president added. "The higher the Tariffs go, the higher the number of companies that will move back to the United States of America!" A White House meeting with Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday can also model pivotal. Trump, who's traveling in Europe, wasn't at the meeting.

Navarro told CNN that the tariffs, due to come into force next week, might not be needed because the United States now has "the Mexicans' attention" on stemming illegal immigration.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said on Wednesday that the threatened tariffs against Mexican goods "may not have to go into effect" if the country can take necessary measures to halt undocumented migrants crossing the southern USA border.

The economic pain would be even greater, Perryman warns, if Mexico retaliates by imposing tariffs of its own, causing a decline in American exports.

"The dialogue was focused on migration flows and what Mexico is doing or is proposing to the United States, our concern about the Central American situation", he said. "I think they want to make a deal, and they sent their top people to try and do it".

The White House has so far been vague about what Trump, the self-avowed "Tariff Man", expects Mexico to do to avoid the duties.

Lopez Obrador has an official list of USA products that could be subject to retaliatory tariffs if the duties take effect, officials said in Mexico City.

In a letter sent to dealers and viewed by Bloomberg, the Japanese auto manufacturer said tariffs could increase expenses among its major suppliers by between $215 million and $1.07 billion.

An increasing number of migrants from Central America have been arriving to the U.S. border with Mexico in recent months. That's the the most in a single month in at least five years; the number has grown every month since January.

Howe said that on Tuesday alone, CBP apprehended more than 4,100 people and had 19,293 people in custody.

US authorities at the southern border with Mexico have faced in recent years an increase in mostly Central American families and unaccompanied minors seeking asylum to escape criminal violence in their home countries.

With the clock ticking toward USA elections in 2020, Trump is facing resistance within his own Republican Party over the threatened tariffs. The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement would replace the North American Free Trade Agreement and the biggest concerns about ratification had come from congressional Democrats in the USA who have questioned how Mexico would enforce labor reforms that strengthen unions. The new trade pact, called the U.S. -Canada-Mexico agreement, was already at risk of stalling in Congress.

The Trump administration's expansion of the global trade war to Mexico could have harsh economic consequences for American workers - especially in Texas.

Pence has previously failed to thread the needle when acting as the president's surrogate in important negotiations.

Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador - who has sought to avoid a confrontation with a longstanding ally - shrugged off Trump's combative rhetoric and said he was prepared to meet with his counterpart to defuse the crisis.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement, which takes care of the thousands of unaccompanied children that cross the border each month, said Wednesday that it has had to cut back secondary services it provides them, including legal aid, education, and recreation.
