Trump reaffirms his intention to impose tariffs on Mexico

The powerful business lobbying group, with over 3 million members nationwide, said it was exploring all options, including possible legal action following the Trump administration's announcement on Thursday to impose tariffs on Mexico in response to the influx of migrants at the southern border.

In a series of tweets on Sunday, Trump extended his demands on Mexico beyond immigration, demanding it stopped an "invasion" of drug dealers and cartels.

"Apparently these (US-Mexico) talks are going well and I think our hope is that the tariffs will be avoided and we'll not have to answer any hypothetical", McConnell said.

"It would be my hope that they're gonna work out things so the tariffs don't go into effect", Grassley said.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May and President Donald Trump walk through the Quadrangle of the Foreign Office for a joint press conference in central London, Tuesday, June 4, 2019. He says new tariffs on Mexico would drive up prices on imports from other countries, too.

Trump has vowed that five-percent tariffs on all imports from its southern neighbor would begin June 10, reaching 25 percent unless Mexico dramatically reduces the flow of undocumented migrants, mainly from Central America, to the U.S. border.

GOP Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana called the tariffs a "mistake" on Sunday and thinks it's unlikely Mr. Trump will impose them.

He added that "I think that Mexico will step up and do what should have been done".

However, congressional Democrats and Republicans alike have warned that the imposition of tariffs could hinder the passage of the U.S. -Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement. The administration said last week that the tariff on goods would increase to 25% in October if immigration at the US-Mexico border is not remedied.

"And every month those tariffs go from 5 per cent to 10 per cent to 15 per cent to 20 and then to 25 per cent".

The top Mexican diplomat earlier told reporters that Mexico had already prevented 250,000 migrants from traveling to the USA border by taking a series of steps, including letting United States asylum seekers remain in Mexico while their applications are reviewed.

North Carolina ranked eighth among the states in terms of total imports from Mexico in 2018, according to data from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Pres. Trump threatened that it would be "foolish" for Senate Republicans to oppose his tariffs.

Trump said Mexico tariffs will "likely" go into effect Monday, six days from now.

Ebrard arrived in Washington over the weekend to meet Wednesday with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The Trump administration has listed three actions it wants from Mexico: strengthening its southern border with Guatemala; stepping up interdiction of busses filled with migrants being smuggled through its territory; and agreeing to accept asylum seekers instead of allowing them to proceed to the USA border.

"They raise the cost of products for American families, reduce market share overseas for US exporters and make our economy less competitive globally".

"We're going to see if we can do something". Even if the tariffs are voted down, it's likely Pres. Trump would veto that decision, leaving the situation up to whether two-thirds of the House and Senate would agree to overturn the veto.

It is unclear what more Mexico can do - and what will be enough - to satisfy Trump because the United States has not presented concrete benchmarks to assess whether the USA ally is sufficiently stemming the migrant flow from Central America.
