Top North Korean official reappears days after purge report

Considered her brother's right hand, Kim Yo-Jong's absence during Kim Jong-Un's visit to Russian Federation in April to meet with President Vladimir Putin drew the media's attention. Kim Yong Ju, the brother of Kim Il Sung - North Korea's founder and the grandfather of Kim Jong Un - disappeared for almost two decades.

It is still possible Kim Yong Chol has been sidelined or demoted.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim Jong-Un and his sister Kim Yo-Jong arrived with several regime heavy-weights at one of the famous mass gymnastic shows held on Monday in Pyongyang, reports Efe news. North Korea test-fired short-range ballistic missiles last month, worrying numerous country's neighbors. He traveled to Washington and met President Donald Trump twice before Kim's two summits with Trump.

CNN reported that Kim Yong Chol had been "almost deprived" of power since the Hanoi summit but had not faced hard labour.

Chosun Ilbo also reported that Senior Envoy Kim Hyok-chol, who was involved in pre-summit working-level talks with American officials, was executed with four other officials from the North's Foreign Ministry for betraying Kim Jong-un after being won over by the United States.

The report's veracity was called into question Sunday after North Korean state media reported that Kim Yong Chol attended an art performance alongside Kim Jong Un.

South Korea's conservative Chosun Ilbo newspaper last week cited an unidentified source to report that Kim Jong Un had ordered his sister to lay low following the collapse of his summit with Trump in February over mismatched demands in sanctions relief and nuclear disarmament.

Last week, the global media reported that Kim Yong-chol, the North Korean leader's right-hand man was sentenced to hard labor and ideological re-education at a camp near the Chinese border, as part of a purge of officials who were involved in the failed summit between the USA and North Korea.

Kim Jong Un's translator in Hanoi, Sin Hye Yong, also is in custody and under investigation, sources said.

South Korea's parliamentary intelligence committee in April said Kim Yong Chol had been censured over his handling of the Hanoi summit, despite the fact he had recently been named a member of the State Affairs Commission, a supreme governing body chaired by Kim Jong Un.

Experts say the North is using measured brinkmanship aimed at increasing pressure on Washington without actually causing the negotiations to collapse.

Kim Yo-jong is a senior official of North Korea's ruling party and is believed to be her brother's closest confidant.

"It's unlikely that Kim would issue extreme punishment unless he's giving up on the talks with the United States", he continued.

About reports of a "shakeup" of Kim's negotiating team in a May 5 interview with Australia's ABC News, Pompeo said it did appear that his future counterpart would be somebody else, adding: "But we don't know that for sure".

Cheong Seong-Chang, of the Sejong Institute, said that it didn't make sense for Kim Jong-un to execute Kim Hyok-chol because Kim Yong-chol is the more senior official, and as such, would be seen as more responsible for the failed summit.

Rodong Sinmun, a state-run North Korean newspaper, released an image that appeared to show Kim Yong Chol a few seats down from the leader.
