Kaymer in control at Memorial Tournament

When Patrick Cantlay turned up to Muirfield Village on Monday, he'd already had three top 10s in a row on Tour - including at both the Masters and PGA Championship - and had finished 4th in this same event past year.

He was down by four strokes to 54-hole leader Martin Kaymer to begin the day, and he had to know that a low score would be needed to make any kind of move on Sunday. It was the lowest final round by a victor in tournament history, and it moved the 27-year-old Californian into the top 10 in the world.

But Cantlay suffered a back injury in 2013 and played just nine tournaments while trying to recover from a stress fracture in his L5 vertebrae.

Cantlay says mentor and tournament host Jack Nicklaus told him to enjoy the moment before he went out and played.

Nicklaus said to have fun, to look around at all the fans having a great time, to relax and to go win the golf tournament. He also missed a 4-foot par putt on the 17th, making his birdie on the 18th meaningless.

In the end, Scott made two pars over the final stretch to finish in solo second, while Cantlay showed off with the exemplary short-game he had produced over the final round to earn a two-shot victory - his first win on Tour since his maiden title at the Shriners Hospital for Children's Open in 2017.

A rising star he ended as the top amateur at the 2011 U.S. Open but later missed two full years with a back injury that almost cost him his career.

He is in his third full year since returning, and a victory over a strong field on a strong course is what long was expected of his skills. He knows how he comes across because when he arrived at Muirfield Village on Sunday, someone jokingly said, "It can't be that bad, can it?" This time, he putted for birdie on every hole on the back nine until the 18th. "I feel like my game is at a level that if I put it all together properly and control myself out there, I can win".

Scott finished at 17-under 271.

The oldest major in the women's game made history with a $1m first prize at the Country Club of Charleston, and it was Jeongeun Lee6 - named such as remarkably the sixth player on the LPGA Tour of Korea to share that name - who secured her maiden major championship following a final round of 70 in testing conditions in SC.

Lee6 finished at 6-under 278 to claim the USGA's first $1 million women's victor check.

It was six-under winning total for the player who became known as Lee6 Jeong-eun when she became the sixth player of that name on the Korean LPGA tour. After two poor chips he finally put the ball within five feet, then missed the putt for bogey.

But he stalled with a double bogey on the 10th, where he drove into a fairway bunker and his first attempt to blast out hit the lip and dropped back in. Americans Lexi Thompson and Jessica Korda were two behind.

Boutier, who won her first LPGA title at the Vic Open in Australia in February, was alone in front on eight-under until her lone bogey of the round at the 16th.

Parel closed with a 70.
