American couple dies of unknown illness while vacationing in Fiji

The couple - from Fort Worth, Texas - was healthy when they arrived on their vacation but fell ill the day before their scheduled departure.

A Fort Worth couple suddenly passed away while on vacation in Fiji after contracting a mysterious illness.

"They were planning an unbelievable vacation", Tracey Calanog, Michelle Paul's sister-in-law, told the outlet, adding that the young couple would often take annual trips together, just the two of them.

"They knew something was going on in their body and were able to get to the hospital", Calanog said Monday.

David and Michelle left behind their son, Ayden, 2, and David's daughter from a previous relationship.

David Paul was an Air Force veteran and the couple was physically fit, relative Tracey Calanog told WFAA.

Mystery surrounds the deaths of two Americans on vacation in Fiji. The report said that Michelle Paul may have died first before her husband.

The US Embassy in Fiji, who were contacted for comment by KVUE, didn't comment specifically on the couple's death, but said there has been warnings of a risky flu affecting the island nation.

"We appreciate the efforts made thus far by the Fijian authorities and stand ready to provide further assistance, if requested", the U.S. Embassy in Fiji announced recently. It is believed the couple contracted a deadly virus, as the Fiji government had issued warnings about a risky flu season in the region.

An Embassy official told KVUE that it is flu season in Fiji and the government has been warning people to take extra precautions to avoid getting sick.

"They were planning an awesome vacation", Calanog said. "We were literally calling places on a hope and a prayer", she shared with KVUE.

With help from the community, Zooey was located and returned to family members.
