Mexico secures Monday talk in Washington on United States tariff threat

Although the president has threatened to impose tariffs targeting the close US ally and second-largest trading partner before, he has previously been talked out of such a move by Republicans and top administration officials.

Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana on Sunday called the tariffs a "mistake" and said it's unlikely Trump will actually impose them.

The president said last week that he will impose a 5% tariff on Mexican goods on 10 June to pressure the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador to act on the issue of migrants.

Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney told Fox News Sunday: "We intentionally left the declaration sort of ad hoc". In fact I fully expect these tariffs to go on to at least the 5 percent level on June 10.

"He's absolutely deadly serious", Mulvaney said.

Trump set off shock and dismay throughout the USA business community and from Republicans in Congress with his tariff threat.

The president was there to "visit with the Pastor and pray for the victims and community of Virginia Beach", said Judd Deere, the White House's deputy press secretary. What are they thinking as our Country is invaded by so many people (illegals) and things (Drugs) that we do not want. "So, there's no specific target, there's no specific percent, but things have to get better". But the Trump administration has fiercely criticized past administrations for making concessions on trade policy to accomplish foreign policy goals.

"We need Mexico to step up and do more".

"We will be tendering six construction contracts at the end of June so that all the parts that are under construction can start at the same time and we can finish the refinery in three years", she said, without giving more details.

Mr. Trump's ultimatum has hurt Mexican financial assets and global stocks, but it met resistance from USA business leaders and lawmakers anxious about the impact of targeting Mexico, one of the United States' top trade partners.

But Australia remains a relatively small supplier of aluminum to the United States, accounting for about 6% of total imports so far this year, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

"Mexico is sending a big delegation to talk about the Border. And these crossings into Mexico are happening at a 150-mile stretch of their Southern border", McAleenan said on CNN's "State of the Union".

The New York Times on Sunday reported President Donald Trump's administration had considered a tax on the multi-billion-dollar industry.

Mexico's Economy Minister Graciela Marquez said on Sunday she would meet with U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in Washington on Monday, as the two governments begin holding talks to resolve the issue in the U.S. capital in the coming week.

He also suggested the tariffs were an immigration issue, separate from the trade deal the United States is trying to negotiate with Mexico and Canada.

Lopez Obrador said a Mexican delegation led by Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard will meet Wednesday in Washington with Pompeo to discuss the tariffs.
