Faf admits that England was the better team

There is little rest for either side, with England facing Pakistan on Monday at Trent Bridge, while South Africa will sweat on the fitness of spearhead Dale Steyn for their clash with Bangladesh on Sunday.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis admitted his team were comprehensively outplayed by England in their Cricket World Cup opener on Thursday but found plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the tournament.

"I'm sure there was a few nerves kicking around - I've not felt like that in a long time when we arrived at the ground".

'It was something we thought about a year ago, ' he revealed.

It was the culmination of a remarkable day for Stokes, who also top-scored for England with 89 in 79 balls and took the last two wickets in successive balls to finish off the South Africans.

A player who has been struck on the head will undergo a five-minute on-field assessment and, if there are concerns, they will leave the pitch before a liaison officer makes a decision on their replacement.

South Africa continued to bowl tightly as Morgan and Stokes set about rebuilding the innings.

Unbelievably Stokes managed to propel himself backwards while throwing out a reverse-cupped hand and pouching a catch he had absolutely no right to hang on to. Since 1992 - just after South Africa's readmission after a 21-year hiatus from the worldwide arena - these teams have clashed in six matches with the honours equally shared, each country winning three times.

De Kock, however, was caught by Root at long leg off Liam Plunkett and when Archer returned to the attack to force Van der Dussen to sky a catch to Moeen, South Africa's hopes looked forlorn.

Running backward toward the boundary rope, England allrounder Ben Stokes leapt high and took an improbable one-handed catch on the stretch to dismiss South Africa's Andile Phehlukwayo.

"We were outplayed in all three departments".

Jofra Archer did the early damage with the ball, the fast bowler taking three for 27 in seven overs.

"I didn´t really know quite hard to react to be honest".
