5G gathers pace in United Kingdom as EE launches first network

While the stats might be a tad underwhelming, perhaps the main benefit of 5G is allowing mobile networks to host vastly many more connections at once.

The very first 5G network providers in the United Kingdom are EE and Vodafone.

Stormzy commentsed: "Big up EE, thank you for letting me launch your 5G network in the UK. Stormzy lit up the Thames and his fans' faces with the energy, passion and charisma that he always brings to his live shows".

The BBC also made the world's first live broadcast on a 5G network.

"Initially, coverage will be very patchy - some areas in city centers may have a good connection but little elsewhere", said William Webb, chief executive of Weightless SIG and 5G expert.

5G will provide faster speeds and increased capacity, and has the potential to boost emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things. The company said it will launch 5G digital innovation hubs in various locations around the United Kingdom, to explore how businesses can take advantage and implement the technology.

The broadcast in question was used to talk about EE's 5G network itself, and during it the reporter (Rory Cellan-Jones) reported getting speeds of 260Mbps on his phone, which is far higher than you can expect on 4G. Speeds on 5G smartphones will be able to break the 1 Gbps mark.

That makes EE's 10GB data cap on its cheapest price plan seem a little bit limiting - although EE says the data cap was reached after several days of test transmissions.

EE also intends to launch a 5GEE Wi-Fi and 5GEE home broadband package. Customers taking the 120GB plan will get three Swappables, worth up to £33.99 per month.

Over the course of this year, EE will also be introducing 5G across the busiest parts of Bristol, Coventry, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield.

More cities will follow in 2020, including Aberdeen, Bournemouth, Brighton, Cambridge, Dundee, Exeter, Ipswich, Norwich, Plymouth and York.
