Samsung TVs Get the New Apple TV App

Apple surprised us all when it announced its TV app would be coming to third-party devices.

The new app carries together several new functionalities including the integration of cable and satellite channels.

The new version of the app comes ahead of the planned fall launch of Apple TV+, the company's video-subscription service that will be stocked with original TV shows and movies.

The service is part of an Apple TV update that's rolling out today in more than 100 countries to iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV along with all 2019 Samsung smart TVs and select 2018 models.

"Users can quickly find and watch their favorites with activity synced across devices, as well as explore expertly curated collections based on a secure and comprehensive understanding of users' viewing interests", the firm notes.

The app will not just show your library of movies and TV shows purchased on Apple, but also the shows on networks, letting you run them from inside the app.

This includes popular services like Acorn and HBO. Once subscribed to a channel, content recommendations from the channel will appear in the Watch Now section of the TV app.

Apple today officially launched its Amazon Channels competitor that offers a single platform for subscription services from HBO, Showtime and more.

In order to gain access to Apple TV and AirPlay 2, Samsung smart TV owners will have to install a new firmware update that enables the services. Parents, desperate for family friendly content, will be elated to see a Kids section that serves up editorially selected titles, a practice that continues Apple's push of being the content curators which we first saw in Apple Music.

But more importantly, users will now be able to watch and download their shows and movies both online and offline, allowing them to watch their favourite programs anywhere and at any time. The iOS 12.3 update also adds AirPlay 2 support for sharing your videos, photos, music, and other files from your iPhone or iPad to an AirPlay 2-enabled smart TV.
