Mike Pompeo: 'Crazy talk' to suggest Trump is soft on Russian Federation

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (L) poses with Britain's Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt at the European Council in Brussels, Belgium, May 13, 2019.

"An aircraft carrier that has at least 40 to 50 planes on it and 6,000 forces gathered within it was a serious threat for us in the past but now it is a target and the threats have switched to opportunities", said Amirali Hajizadeh, the head of the IRG's aerospace division, according to Iranian media.

Britain's foreign minister, Jeremy Hunt, said the United Kingdom was anxious about the risk of accidental conflict between Iran and the US.

"Mike Pompeo heard that very clearly from us today, not only from myself, but also from other European Union member states, that we are living in a crucial delicate moment where the most responsible attitude to take is that of maximum restraint".

Iran last week announced it was suspending some of its commitments under the agreement, a year after US President Donald Trump withdrew from the accord and imposed swingeing sanctions on the Islamic republic - putting the deal in peril.

Hunt, who was due later to meet Pompeo along with the foreign ministers of France and Germany and the EU's diplomatic chief, also expressed concern about the risks of a nuclear arms race in the Middle East if Iran were to acquire such weapons.

In a story May 12 about Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meeting with European officials to discuss Iran, The Associated Press reported erroneously that he had canceled a stop in Berlin to fly to Iran.

The ministers from the European signatories to the nuclear accord - Germany, United Kingdom and France - all publicly criticised the hardline USA approach.

According to German's DPA news agency, foreign ministers of Germany, France and United Kingdom, as the three European signatories to the JCPOA, as well as EU's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini will hold a special session today to discuss the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which has been in shambles since President Donald Trump withdrew U.S. from it and re-imposed sanctions on Iran. "In those places we're going to protect America's interests", he said.

But she noted that the deal stands a chance if a joint effort is made along with other signatories of the agreement, including China and Russian Federation.

Hunt warned of the importance of ensuring that Iran doesn't resume banned atomic activities, saying that "if Iran becomes a nuclear power, its neighbors are likely to want to become nuclear powers". He was traveling Tuesday to Russia and set to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Sochi.

The US has continued to build pressure on Iran, with Pompeo accusing Tehran of planning "imminent" attacks and bolstering the military presence in the Gulf.

"The Secretary will have a very candid conversation about concerns in our bilateral relationship, "including Russia's breach of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and "Kremlin-backed attempts to meddle in USA and other foreign elections".
