Manchester United scrapped move for Ajax's De Ligt due to weight concerns

Despite his age, De Ligt is already the club captain of his boyhood club. The Red Devils, however, failed to sign both players and are now at sixth place in the 2018-19 Premier League standings, having also gotten eliminated from qualification to the Champions League next season.

De Ligt has frequently been linked with the likes of Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Juventus throughout the campaign.

And Nicol believes the club that signs the central defender will have a long-term asset on their hands.

Taking both his age and his momentous impact at the Johan Cruyff Arena this season into account, De Ligt is considered to be one of the most coveted young centre-backs in the world. United have been desperate to land the rising star this summer ahead of rivals Barcelona and Liverpool.

According to an exclusive report covered by The Daily Star, Man Utd were willing to agree a deal worth £65million (£250,000-a-week, five year deal) to sign the Dutch global.

However, United's interest in the defender is no secret and Van der Sar has given them a little hope with his latest statement.
