Israel has been at the receiving end of more than 600 rockets since May 3, by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) from the Gaza Strip.

"To the Gazan people-these terrorist acts against Israel will bring you nothing but more misery. END the violence and work towards peace - it can happen!"

It came after the most serious flare-up in violence between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza since a 2014 war.

Nevertheless, following rocket attacks earlier this year, Israel appeared ready to stick to pledges of reducing or removing restrictions on Gaza if Hamas stuck to the cease-fire.


Israel did not immediately comment on the announcement, but later in the morning, the Home Front Command lifted all restrictions for Gaza border residents implying a ceasefire was agreed upon.

Israel, which has in the past focused attacks on destroying buildings, began to direct strikes against militants and in one case, carried out a targeted assassination against a Hamas commander, Ahmed Khudari. Israel observes Memorial Day and Independence Day this week, and next week Tel Aviv will play host to the Eurovision Song Contest.

In the northern Gaza Strip, residents searched for a man and his wife missing among the rubble of an apartment building.

Israeli opposition politicians - and at least one from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's own party - criticised the agreement.

Israel said its blockade is necessary to stop weapons reaching Hamas, with which it has fought three wars since the group seized control of Gaza in 2007, two years after Israel withdrew its settlers and troops from the area.


Egyptian and United Nations officials held talks throughout to reach a truce, as they have done repeatedly in the past, and there were global calls for calm.

Conricus said Israeli intelligence had confirmed that a Palestinian woman and a 14-month-old baby killed the day before did not die as a result of an Israeli strike but of Palestinian rocket fire.

In February, she insinuated in a tweet that politicians in the US were bought by AIPAC, the non-partisan group seeking to foster relations between the USA and Israel.

The escalation in the Gaza Strip started when four Palestinians were martyred, including a teenager, and 51 wounded on Friday in Israeli army attacks on Hamas-affiliated sites and a separate attack on a rally against the decade-long occupation and siege of the Gaza Strip.

Over the next two days, hundreds of rockets were launched into Israel from Gaza, with the Israeli military pounding the besieged enclave with air strikes and artillery in return. It took CNN another six paragraphs to reveal that Israeli airstrikes killed a pregnant Palestinian woman.
