Facebook Messenger unveils new video and business features

There will be new features for Groups based on a Groups' category, for example, health-related Groups will be able to let members post questions anonymously within the Group and career-related Groups will have new templates for job-postings and the ability to apply for jobs directly through Facebook.

For Messenger, Facebook has slimmed down the app to help it run faster, also on more basic smartphones. "Last year, Facebook was plagued by a controversy - invading its users" privacy, data misuse, and security problems. Facebook will start testing this opt-in feature "in a few places" ahead of a wider rollout.

For WhatsApp - which has its biggest userbase in India - a new catalogue feature is being added for Business users to help small and medium enterprises using the platform to showcase their goods.

In an effort to provide users with the content that they care about the most on Facebook, the company is introducing a dedicated space on the app where users can discover stories and messages with their closest friends and family.

Meanwhile a new feature called Meet New Friends is created to help people connect with strangers that have shared interests or real-world connections, like working for the same employer or attending the same school. Ninety-nine per cent of the company's revenue comes from targeted advertising, from profiles that are tied to the information Facebook collects about people, including what they post publicly on Facebook. As part of Facebook's overhaul to bring Groups to the center of the app, the company announced new updates to the platform. The news follows Instagram's announcement of the native Checkout feature that lets users buy products without ever leaving the app. Focusing more on groups, now you can set status messages or photos with only the people you like.

Facebook Dating has also been launched in 14 more countries, including Philippines, Guyana, Suriname Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia Paraguay, and Uruguay.

Zuckerberg mentioned last week that Facebook's concentrate on communications will likely probably be built out within the following five years or more.

The Facebook-owned messaging app started beta testing its UPI-based payments system in India a year ago and this integrated payments system has already garnered over 1 million active users.

"We're rolling out FB5, fresh new design for Facebook that's simpler, faster, more immersive and puts your communities at the centre", said the firm.

It's unclear if a new design and approach to privacy will usher in real change for the beleaguered company, which reaches more than 2 billion people around the world, or if it's just a new coat of paint.

Not only do Facebook Groups provide direct engagement with followers, but they'll soon give brands taking advantage of the platform more exposure on the app. While numerous new changes to Facebook appear to focus on privacy and creating a more intimate experience for users, numerous changes in store for WhatsApp and Instagram focus on e-commerce. So, even if your friends are not on Messenger, but are on Instagram or WhatsApp, you can chat with them through Messenger.

And, the company has said to be working on reducing the app's size too.

Priced at $399 (both Quest and Rift S), these headsets are available for 22 countries with pre-orders starting right away.
