The first reports of explosions came at about 08:45 local time on Sunday with six blasts reported within a small space of time.

In the aftermath of the Sunday morning attacks on catholic churches, and key luxury hotels in the heart of Colombo where freign travellers stay, experts had commented that the bombing bore the hallmarks of a typical worldwide Islamist terror strike.

The fact that these attacks successfully targeted five star hotels located in Sri Lanka's commercial capital, which are expected to be well-guarded, shows that security of "these areas could still be breached", she noted.

On Monday, Sri Lankan authorities said that they had been warned about a terrorist plot targeting churches and tourist destinations weeks ago.

It has blamed a little-known local jihadist group, National Thowheed Jamath, although no-one has yet admitted carrying out the attacks.

Mr Senaratne said intelligence agencies had begun issuing warnings about the group on 4 April, after which the defence ministry sent a detailed warning to the chief of police; and on 11 April a memo was sent to the heads of several security divisions.

Melbourne man Sam, 27, was having breakfast with a friend at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo when two bombs went off. Suicide bombers also struck the Kochikade church near the Colombo harbor, a church in Negombo, north of Colombo, and the Zion church in Batticaloa in the Eastern province.


The New York Times reported Sri Lankan officials were asking "other countries for help in uncovering global links".
